IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Technological advancement has grown a lot compared to past few decades that it's like a two edged sword with benefits and drawbacks. Some people in societies believe social media exporsure and high competition is causing a lot stress whereas older people reckon similar level of stress were even more in their time.

Due to the over consumption of online content through various platforms like youtube, facebook, instagram and many more, most of the youth compare other's online presence to their daily life and get depressed as the users only post achievements, travels, and so on. Youths look into their life and question their ability which might lead to pressure and depression. For example content's ease of access has also made individuals knowledgable and highly competitive everywhere like in school and job market. Seeing competition everywhere increased more of their stress and made it difficult to handle.

On the other hand, some group of people mentioned the level of stress was even more in their time as well. They just didn't share their problems openly as no online platforms were present previously. Also they mentioned that dealing with stress was part of their life and thought it is completely normal human traits that everyone has. For instance, only television or radios were there for previous generation and they were more outgoing and open with the local community which was working as a medicine to stress.

In my opinion, though the previous generation might have suffered more in their time, I feel stress now is even more difficult to deal with the constant exposure of content everywhere and it's not easy to ignore.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear personal position: you explain that online comparison and competition increase stress today, acknowledge that earlier generations may have faced greater pressure, and conclude that modern stress is harder to manage. The examples about social media and earlier reliance on television, radio, and local communities are relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the explanation of why previous generations experienced more pressure is brief and does not identify specific pressures, while the modern-stress argument receives more detail. The claim that earlier people were “more outgoing” also needs clearer support. To strengthen the response, explain the pressures faced in the past and compare them directly with present-day pressures, using more specific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. This makes the discussion easy to follow, and phrases such as “On the other hand” and “In my opinion” signal shifts in argument. Within paragraphs, however, some links between ideas are abrupt. For example, the move from online comparison to increased competition, and then to difficulty handling stress, would benefit from clearer explanation of how one leads to the next. The reference to “some group of people” is also vague, and “they” in the following sentences could be more precise. Use linking expressions selectively and make the relationship between each example and its main point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “over consumption,” “online presence,” “competitive,” “pressure,” and “local community.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and terms such as “constant exposure” are relevant to your conclusion. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision, including “social media exporsure,” “a lot stress,” “similar level of stress were even more,” and “normal human traits.” Spelling errors such as “exporsure” and “knowledgable” also affect accuracy. Aim to learn common collocations as complete phrases and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would help distinguish psychological pressure from general competition and make the comparison between generations clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a cause-and-effect sentence beginning “Due to the over consumption…” and a concession in “though the previous generation might have suffered more…”. Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Technological advancement has grown a lot compared to past few decades that…” has an unclear clause structure; “similar level of stress were” has a subject–verb agreement problem; and “the constant exposure of content” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. Articles and plurals also need attention, as in “in their time” and “normal human traits.” Practise building complex sentences with clear clause boundaries, and proofread agreement, articles, and prepositions.
