IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response makes an attempt to discuss two views and gives a personal opinion, but it does not address the question accurately enough. The task concerns whether people today experience more stress than earlier generations, and whether stress is exaggerated; instead, much of the essay discusses stress caused by past memories, such as missing someone or remembering a parent’s death. The examples about exam results and investment uncertainty are more relevant to present-day stress, but they are not compared with pressures faced by previous generations. The final claim that “pressure or stress” mean the same thing does not explain which view you support. To improve, state both views clearly, compare them directly, and develop a consistent opinion with relevant examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: the response has an introduction, separate paragraphs beginning “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a concluding paragraph. These markers help readers recognise the intended structure. However, the overall progression is unclear because the first main paragraph focuses on memories and loss rather than the historical comparison in the prompt, and the conclusion introduces the idea that pressure and stress have the same meaning without establishing it earlier. Connections within paragraphs are also sometimes difficult to follow, particularly the sequence of examples about relationships and bereavement. Use topic sentences that directly identify each view, then explain and support that view in a logical order. Clearer referencing and fewer abrupt shifts would make the argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary is basic and often repetitive, with “stress” used frequently and few precise alternatives to express different causes or levels of pressure. Some wording makes the intended meaning difficult to understand, as in “the stress is create by the person themselves” and “his money recover or loss in that stition.” There are also frequent spelling and word-form errors, including “opinins,” “suggeset,” “painfull,” and “childern,” which reduce clarity. You do attempt relevant terms such as “pressure,” “memories,” and “results,” but these are not used with enough range or accuracy to explain the topic precisely. Build vocabulary for work, financial, family, and social pressures, and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts some longer sentences and uses basic linking structures, but sentence forms are limited and errors occur frequently, sometimes obscuring meaning. For example, “some people said the real reason of stress is the memories of past” has problems with tense, articles, and sentence construction; “some people fell in stress because he missing some body” also has errors in agreement and verb form. The final sentence, “the both words meaning is same pressure or stress,” is difficult to interpret because its structure is incomplete. Aim first for accurate simple sentences, then practise combining them with clauses using “because,” “although,” and “while.” Check subject–verb agreement, verb forms, articles, and punctuation when editing.
