IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Others believe that people suffer more from stress currently than in the past, while some believe that the level of stress people have today is exaggerated and that people in the past generation were under more pressure but they did not have the idea of suffering as being caused by stress.
The reason why some people think that ,people more from stress right now is because of self awareness. In the past people were not aware of the changes in their daily lives in terms of physical, environmental and social factors, let say for example when someone does not want to engage with the others the first thing to rule out is stress and the way they behave in thier environment for instance steressed people will always have problems in mantaining hygiene and accomplishing task.
The reason why those who think that the past generation were more stressed and did not have the idea of suffering from it is that they lacked awareness when it comes to matters concerning stress as compared to today.
In my opinion,as stress becomes a major problem in our socities leading to mental health illnesses, people should be well aware of themselves and others. They should seek help when they face any problems ,they should be ways to curb the level of stress by educating the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You introduce both views and state an opinion, so the response is relevant to the question. However, the discussion is only partial: the first body paragraph explains greater awareness today, while the second largely repeats that earlier generations lacked awareness rather than explaining why they may have faced more pressure. Your opinion that stress is a major problem and that people should seek help is present, but it is not developed with a clear reason or supporting example. The response also does not meet the stated 250-word minimum, which limits how fully you can address the task. To strengthen the response, explain each view distinctly and support your position with a specific example or evidence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure: an opening that introduces the debate, paragraphs discussing the views, and a final paragraph giving your opinion. This makes the main direction understandable. However, there is little overall progression because the two discussion paragraphs overlap: both focus on awareness, and the second does not clearly advance the argument about past pressures. Connections between ideas are also sometimes awkward, as in “let say for example,” and punctuation around linking phrases is inconsistent. Organise the body around one distinct view per paragraph, then use clear transitions to show contrast and development. This would make the argument easier to follow without relying on repeated explanations.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “self awareness,” “mental health illnesses,” “physical, environmental and social factors,” and “seek help.” These choices show an ability to discuss stress beyond very basic terms. However, the range is limited and some expressions are imprecise or incorrectly formed, such as “people more from stress,” “the past generation,” and “the idea of suffering as being caused by stress.” Spelling errors such as “thier,” “steressed,” “mantaining,” and “socities” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe people as “experiencing stress” and refer to “previous generations.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “people who think that the past generation were more stressed” and a conditional example beginning “when someone does not want to engage.” However, control is inconsistent, and several sentence patterns are faulty or difficult to read. For instance, “The reason why some people think that, people more from stress right now is because…” has an unnecessary comma and an incomplete construction, while “they should be ways to curb” lacks a clear grammatical subject and verb. There are also errors in articles, agreement, and punctuation, including “the others” and missing spaces after commas. Practise building complete clauses and proofreading sentence boundaries.
