IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Stress is one of the most common problem in today’s world. It is thought that people suffer from stress more than they did in the past. However others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. It is true because there is huge difference in the stress our elders had or now a days stress. In this easy, both views will be discussed.

In some societies, people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. It is because people in the past had more activities than in present. People were buzzy in their works and took themselves bussy in activities. They had healthy eating habits. They used to eat homemade food. They had no traffic congestions like today’s world. And they got fresh air when then come out of the house. So it can be said that older people had less stress than now a days.

However, people now a days are short tempered. They all are obsessed with junk food with greedy drinks. That is not healthy for human’s health. People are not productive these days because everything is done online and people become lazy. They do everything online that’s why their less physical activity causes them to be stressed out in this situation. There is a lot of traffic issues that causes them to lose their temper. So, in my view both opinion are right.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views, but the development is limited and the essay is under the required word count (232 words). The arguments regarding lifestyle differences are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. While a position is stated, it is not fully supported with convincing evidence or logical progression. The under-length penalty is applied here as the essay fails to meet the minimum 250-word requirement, which prevents a full exploration of the complex topic. To improve, you should expand on your points with specific examples and ensure you meet the minimum length to allow for a more comprehensive discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive start. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite basic and sometimes repetitive (e.g., 'It is because', 'They had'). The transition between ideas is mechanical, and the logical flow within paragraphs is occasionally disjointed. For instance, the jump from 'healthy eating habits' to 'traffic congestions' lacks a smooth connecting thought. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect sentences and paragraphs more naturally, ensuring that each idea leads logically to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and contains several inaccuracies, such as 'buzzy' instead of 'busy' and 'greedy drinks' instead of 'sugary drinks'. The range of vocabulary is sufficient for basic communication but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. There is also a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to stress, lifestyle, and societal changes, and pay closer attention to word choice and collocations to ensure your meaning is conveyed accurately and professionally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('one of the most common problem'), article misuse, and awkward phrasing ('in this easy' instead of 'in this essay'). While the meaning is generally clear, these errors are persistent and distract the reader. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like pluralisation and verb forms. Incorporating a wider range of complex sentence structures, such as conditional or relative clauses, would also help demonstrate better grammatical control.
