IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, stress has become a subject of considerable debate. Some people believe that it was more in the past, While other argue that it never existed in the remote times. This essay will explain both perspective in detail before giving my opinion.

To commence with, stress has become an important issue in this modern evolving world as there are more crimes and more mental issues. Firstly, the more people are indulged in bad activities due stress of unemployment and food shortages, as this is seen in India where most crime activities are done by those people who belong to poor family, because they take the stress of society as they want to enjoy equal life status as other does. Secondly, nowadays the rates of mental ailments has increased dramatically in the past few years, this the clear indication of stress. This experiment is done in Japan, and research findings concludes those people who take stress are more likely to suffer from pyschological and neurological issues.

However, the remote past also suffered from this issue as there were also mental problems and crimes in the past as well. One of the reason for this is that, the medical history reveals that in 1900 there were some scientists who suffred from neurological issue leading to end of their career. Another reason is that, crime history also reveal that stress force the people of 17th century compel them to catch money from banks and even from the house of local inhabitants.

To conclude, although both viewpoints have valid arguments, I believe that nowadays more ratio of crimes and more number of mental illnesses is a clear indicator of more stress in these days as compared to past era.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both viewpoints and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The arguments regarding the past are historically vague and lack logical depth, such as the claim about 17th-century bank robberies as evidence of stress. While the prompt is addressed, the supporting evidence is often anecdotal or lacks sufficient analytical rigour to fully support the claims. The essay meets the requirements of the task but would benefit from more nuanced exploration of why stress is perceived differently across generations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'Firstly', and 'However', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother to improve the flow of arguments. Overall, the structure is sufficient to guide the reader through the essay without confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, though it lacks sophistication. There are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'indulged in bad activities' instead of 'engaged in criminal behaviour' and 'catch money' instead of 'rob banks'. Spelling errors like 'pyschological' and 'suffred' occur, but these do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise collocations and academic terminology related to sociology or mental health.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'some people believe that it was more in the past' (missing object), 'research findings concludes' (subject-verb agreement), and 'more ratio of crimes' (awkward phrasing). While these errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions, as these are the most common areas where your accuracy falters.
