IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is undeniable that stress is common word in everybody's life. Each and every one on this earth is suffering from this phenomena. In this regard, some argue that currently, people are suffering from more stress compared to earlier days while other communities maintain that, in past days, people were very stressed compared to now but they didn't recognize their stress. This essay will outline not only both perspectives but also my opinion which is in favor of the former statement in the forthcoming paragraphs with a logical conclusion.
On the one hand, presently, in this modern era people are getting stressed more due to various reasons. The first point to be consider is that people feel stress when they feel pressure on their bodies. To explain, mental pressure leads to huge amount of burden compared to stress of physical work. For instance, nowadays, almost every person in this world is facing mental pressures which are leading to stress problems. Another reason is is the digital revolution. To exemplify, constant connectivity via smartphones and emails means people can rarely disconnect from work, blurring the boundaries between professional and personal life. Furthermore, rapid urbanization has led to daily irritants like heavy traffic congestion and high living costs, forcing people into a hyper-competitive race to achieve financial stability. Unlike the past, where the end of the workday meant true rest, the modern mind is subjected to a non-stop flow of information and pressure, leading to chronic mental exhaustion.
On the other hand, there are several points in favor of earlier people who do not recognize the stress is disastrous way. The prime one is that earlier, people used to do more physical work. By doing physical work their body will feel stress but they will be recovered by getting some rest and taking healthy food. In earlier times, Food is fresh and there are no fertilizers. For example, formerly, mostly every person is a farmer, they will go physical work more and eat healthy food and then they will some sleep to overcome that stress. Moreover, previous generations faced much higher stakes, even if the word "stress" was not part of their vocabulary. Throughout history, human beings confronted philosophical threats such as global world wars, deadly epidemics without modern medicine, and widespread poverty. To illustrate, a farming family a century ago faced the literal threat of starvation if a crop failed. Proponents of this view argue that modern society has grown fragile, and the word "stress" today is merely the discomfort of comfort, magnified by a modern media landscape that hyper-focuses on mental health.
In conclusion, although previous generations remained highly under stress due to world wars, pandemics, yet in my view, modern generation is facing higher stakes because of the digital evolution of technology.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the contrast between modern digital pressure and the physical hardships of the past. The essay maintains a consistent position throughout. While some arguments could be slightly more nuanced, the response effectively covers the requirements of the task with relevant examples and logical support.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'To exemplify', and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader. However, there are occasional instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is a bit repetitive. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally sufficient and appropriate for the task. You demonstrate an ability to use topic-specific language like 'digital revolution', 'chronic mental exhaustion', and 'hyper-competitive'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'common word' instead of 'common term' and 'this phenomena' (which should be 'this phenomenon'). Despite these minor slips, the range is adequate to convey your ideas with precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are frequent error-free sentences, there are persistent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'every person is a farmer, they will go physical work') and tense consistency. Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences are slightly clunky. The errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score for accuracy.
