IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people think that nowadays people are more suffer throw stress then pastt like study stress, job stress, anxiety and panic attack .Other think that in the past people are more stress then today ,day by day people just exaggerate the problem instead of finding solution. This essay will dicuss both view,i understand that we can watch more stress disease in todays generation.

On the one hand, people think that stress is the major dilemma in this generation.I totally agree in this view ,because as we can see that competition is increase day to day,it is the reason to enhance the mental disease. For instance, people have trying to compete each other , student wants higheist score in tha class room, empolyee want promotion in the company. Moreover this are the predominant source of suffering the stress.Hoewever, expenses is caused to invoved the stress disease. consequence is these challenges is to exushted the humen brain.

On the other hand, people think that in the past people had more pressure then present.I disagree this view because in the past people have no more facility but the healthy enviroment. For example, if we saw our parents they are not educated then us ,they dont know much more about the technology but they are more active and healthy then us .In addition,In the past people was doing physical work more then technology work. The result is they are more vigorous then us.

Some people think that today genreration just exaggerate the stress, stress is not exist. some think stress disease is a serious problem nowaday, axiety and panic attack it can be the cause of death . In my point of view people should take seroius about the stress disease.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited. For example, the argument regarding past generations is somewhat vague, relying on generalisations about 'physical work' and 'healthy environments' rather than specific, well-supported evidence. The position is clear, but the explanation of why stress is considered a 'dilemma' or why it is 'exaggerated' lacks depth. To improve, you should expand on your points with more concrete examples and ensure your reasoning is fully explained rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' are used, but the internal flow of sentences is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and missing transitions. For instance, the transition between the discussion of modern competition and the mention of 'expenses' is abrupt and unclear. The referencing is sometimes confusing, and the logical progression of ideas within paragraphs needs to be more fluid to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'suffer throw stress', 'mental disease' (when referring to stress), and 'exushted the humen brain'. These errors occasionally make the meaning difficult to grasp. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'competition' and 'promotion', the overall range is narrow. To improve, focus on learning collocations (e.g., 'suffer from stress' rather than 'suffer throw stress') and using more precise academic vocabulary to express your ideas clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('people is', 'stress is not exist'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, such as 'For instance, people have trying to compete each other , student wants higheist score in tha class room'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the persistent errors in basic grammar and punctuation impede the flow of the text. You need to focus on mastering basic sentence construction, verb tenses, and proofreading for common slips before attempting more complex structures.
