IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Generally, stress and anxiety refer to the threat that is perceived by the people; it is an unpleasant sensation. Some people argue that people used to suffer more from stress in the past. While there may be some validity to this point, I believe that the amount of stress in today's generation of people is quite exponential and more severe mainly because of social media.

On the one hand, people think that stress has always been there for a long time. The suicidal data shows that many people were suffering from anxiety and depression, which is the severe form of stress. Although most of the cases have not been reported, there is enough evidence to confirm that stress has become an integral part of life. Moreover, there were not varieties of medication that could be used to manage stress. And people treated them as an attention seeker whenever anyone sought help. For instance, there was not any mental health education that helps to cope with stress.

On the other hand, people are convinced that the majority of the current generation individuals are suffering from any kind of mental stress mainly because of the excessive use of social media and online gaming. Moreover, people show their bright part of life on social media, shadowing their struggle part of life, which causes tremendous pressure on other minds, feeling that only their life is facing problems. Additionally, people make a malicious comment on social media in order to damage others' reputations, which makes people more anxious even further.

In conclusion, stress has been an integral part of life from the very beginning of evolution, but technological advancement has made people more monotonous, which has ultimately led to loneliness, a major cause of stress.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though some arguments could be more thoroughly developed. For instance, the point about 'suicidal data' in the past is a strong starting point but lacks specific context or elaboration to fully support the argument. The conclusion introduces a new idea about 'monotonous' lives and 'loneliness' which was not previously discussed in the body paragraphs, making the conclusion feel slightly disconnected from the preceding analysis. Overall, the position is consistent, but the depth of analysis is somewhat limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the sentence 'people treated them as an attention seeker', where 'them' refers to people suffering from stress rather than the condition itself. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas, although the link between the final conclusion and the body paragraphs could be tighter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'anxiety', 'depression', and 'technological advancement'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'exponential' to describe the amount of stress, which is mathematically incorrect in this context. Phrases like 'shadowing their struggle part of life' are slightly awkward and non-idiomatic. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and natural collocation required for a higher band score. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'there was not any mental health education that helps to cope' (tense inconsistency) and 'people are convinced that the majority of the current generation individuals are suffering from any kind of mental stress' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are slightly clunky. While the student attempts complex structures, the control is inconsistent, leading to errors that, while not preventing understanding, are noticeable.
