IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 8.5)
In contemporary discourse, psychological well-being has become a central focus, leading to a polarizing debate regarding modern stress levels. While one school of thought argues that contemporary lifestyle demands have triggered unprecedented levels of mental strain, counter-arguments suggest that modern stress is overemphasised and that historical generations endured far greater, unacknowledged hardships. This essay explores both perspectives before concluding that while past generations faced harsher physical vulnerabilities, the structural and digital complexities of modern life have created a uniquely pervasive form of psychological strain.
On the one hand, proponents of the exaggeration theory argue that our ancestors faced existential threats that dwarf modern inconveniences. Historically, human life was defined by immediate, high-stakes pressures such as global warfare, widespread famine, economic depressions, and lethal diseases without antibiotic treatments. Despite these brutal conditions, the clinical concept of "stress" was largely unrecognised, and individuals were expected to demonstrate resilience without therapeutic interventions. From this viewpoint, the modern preoccupation with mental pressure is seen as a byproduct of a more comfortable society that has lowered its threshold for what constitutes a crisis. Consequently, everyday workplace deadlines or social anxieties are perceived as major problems simply because basic survival needs are safely met.
On the other hand, there are compelling reasons to believe that modern societal structures generate severe and unique psychological pressures. The primary catalyst is the digital revolution and the rise of the "always-on" hustle culture. Unlike past generations who could physically leave their work at the factory or office, the internet and smartphones ensure that modern professionals are perpetually accessible, blurring the boundaries between labor and domestic rest. Furthermore, the hyper-competitive global economy has intensified financial instability and housing insecurity, forcing individuals to work longer hours under constant performance scrutiny. The rise of social media platforms also subjects individuals to relentless comparative anxiety, creating a continuous undercurrent of inadequacy that historical communities, anchored by local and physical support networks, rarely experienced.
In my opinion, comparing historical and modern pressure is not a matter of determining which was worse, but rather recognising how the nature of suffering has evolved. Previous generations undoubtedly endured superior physical hardship and existential peril; however, their stressors were often tangible and episodic. In contrast, modern stress is insidious, chronic, and deeply psychological. The relentless pace of technological advancement, combined with a breakdown of traditional community safety nets, means that while we may be physically safer than our ancestors, our minds are subjected to a continuous, low-grade emergency state. In conclusion, although past generations faced monumental physical struggles without the vocabulary to name their trauma, modern stress is far from a fabrication. It is a legitimate public health crisis born from the unique demands, isolation, and constant connectivity of the 21st century.
