IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
While some argue that more people in recent years are suffering more form stress, others see that as exaggeration because older generations were under more pressure and they didn't seem to experience this amount of stress. Although social media and evading responsibility may have contributed the widespread of elevated stress levels as a major issue, I strongly believe that the stress people are enduring is a serious problem, causing higher suicide and crime rates.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which severely limits the development of the task. While the student identifies both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, the ideas are not extended or supported with relevant evidence or examples. The response functions more as an introduction than a full essay. To improve, the student must expand on each viewpoint with specific examples and logical reasoning to meet the length requirement and demonstrate a deeper engagement with the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response consists of only one paragraph, which is insufficient for an essay structure. While there is a basic attempt at logical flow using 'While' and 'Although', the lack of development makes it difficult to assess the overall coherence. There is no clear paragraphing or progression of ideas. To improve, the student should structure the essay into clear paragraphs: an introduction, two body paragraphs discussing the opposing views, and a conclusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the limited length provided, but it lacks the range and precision expected at higher bands. Phrases like 'contributed the widespread of' are grammatically incorrect and demonstrate a lack of control over collocations. The student uses basic vocabulary such as 'major problem' and 'serious problem'. To improve, the student should aim for more sophisticated vocabulary and ensure correct word forms and collocations are used.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains several grammatical errors, such as 'suffering more form stress' (spelling/preposition error) and 'contributed the widespread of' (incorrect verb pattern). The sentence structure is relatively simple, and the attempt at a complex sentence is marred by these errors. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of errors in such a short text is a concern. To improve, the student should focus on sentence structure, verb patterns, and proofreading for basic spelling and preposition errors.
