IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some nations, stress is considered as a significant problem and it is believed that this generation is facing more pressure relative to the former generations. On the contrary, other group of individuals feel that the stress of this era is just overstated because the previous generations were not aware of the concept of stress.

The first group of people must be arguing that due to advancements in technology the work environment is getting more and more stressed. This is because they have to manage heavy work loads and this action places them under immense pressure effecting their health. For example, it is reported in a research that the employees of 21st century are facing 30% more work pressure as compared to the employees from 20th century. Similarly, this group may also argue that the population is increasing and every employment is getting competitive. This increased job competition is imposing stress on this generation.

The second group must be stating that the technological innovations are offering more advantages than disadvantages as beyond work environment the technology has helped in a significant progress. This progress has transformed societies into a place having such facilities that were not available to previous generations. It can be evidenced by a most common example, in past we have to wash our cloths but now they can be washed and pressed automatically. This facilitated environment should reduced stress but this generation is exaggerating it.

In conclusion, I would like to put forward that the level stress is not exaggerated by the people of this generation because they are facing more competitive work environments with hectic routines.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the first body paragraph provides a specific example regarding work pressure, the second body paragraph relies on a rather simplistic example of household chores to represent 'technological progress.' The argument could be strengthened by exploring the psychological or sociological aspects of stress rather than focusing solely on domestic convenience. The position is clear, but the depth of analysis is limited, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the contrary,' 'Similarly,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For instance, the phrase 'The first group of people' and 'The second group' is used to introduce paragraphs, which is functional but lacks variety. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'technological innovations' and 'competitive work environments.' However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and minor collocation errors, such as 'every employment is getting competitive' (should be 'the job market is becoming more competitive') and 'this facilitated environment should reduced stress' (should be 'should have reduced'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'effecting their health' (should be 'affecting'), 'in past we have to wash our cloths' (should be 'in the past we had to wash our clothes'), and 'the level stress' (missing 'of'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and the punctuation is generally functional but basic.
