IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Stress has always been regarded as a major problem for each and every society since it affects its members' pysche in a drastic way.It is also thought to be more prominent in this day and age.But there are people who believe that the stress that people have today is exaggerated.

In my opinion, i think that the stress that people are experiencing today is not uncalled for and is definitely not exaggerated.First of all, today's society is one filled with stressfull situations mainly because of the technological advancements that humanity hjas achieved and we can take the example of Ai ,this variable has created huge problems since it is now able to take over peoples' jobs which has made a lot of people anxious and insecure thus creating stress. Not only that, but it also did actually take over a lot of jobs since big coorporates are after efficency and cutting down costs this lead to people being in rough situations since they were relying on these jobs to feed their family and now these robots are taking over the whole job market and killing their chances to work and provide for those they care about and themselves which has caused a lot of cases of depression, broken homes and even homelessness in extreme cases.Global estimates show that between 150 to 160 thousand people got laid off because of Ai.Second of all, with social media taking over a lot of people are being pulled into dramas of influencers and are even fighting amongst themselves about them which cause increased agression and even lead to online bullying which has become a really big problem and has caused a spike in disturbed teenagers and mental problems thus causing the build up of stress which wasn't really the case back then since people couldnt comunicate from affar and couldnt do it annonymously without fear of consequences or punishement and i'm living proof of that since i was once victim to bullying and i really couldn't do much since i didn't know the identity of the bully. Finally, these days, a lot of wars are going on with the goal monopolize ressources because of how little is left after the unrational consumption across the years and even the consumption by Ai.these wars are causing a lot of tragedies, creating a lot of victims and are leaving behind a trail of death which is a really stressfull situation for those who are in these war bound places and even for those who are trying to stop them for example the conflict in sudan .In coclusion the situation nowadays is without a doubt more stressfull then before.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal position. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the point about AI is well-supported with specific examples, the discussion regarding previous generations is largely neglected, failing to fully address the prompt's requirement to discuss why some feel stress was higher in the past. The essay focuses heavily on modern stressors rather than balancing the two perspectives. To improve, ensure that both sides of the prompt receive equal weight and depth of analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the structure is problematic. The second paragraph is excessively long and contains multiple distinct ideas that should have been separated into smaller, more focused paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First of all' and 'Finally', but they are sometimes used mechanically. Additionally, there are issues with sentence-level cohesion, such as run-on sentences and comma splices (e.g., '...cutting down costs this lead to...'). Improving paragraphing and using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'pysche', 'stressfull', 'hjas', 'coorporates', 'efficency', 'comunicate', 'annonymously', 'punishement', 'unrational', 'coclusion'). These errors are noticeable and detract from the professional tone of the essay. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'technological advancements' and 'monopolize resources', the range is limited by the repetitive nature of the writing and the persistent spelling inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay relies heavily on simple and compound sentences, often linked incorrectly. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with punctuation, such as missing spaces after periods and the misuse of commas. Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency are also inconsistent (e.g., 'this lead to' instead of 'this led to'). While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction and punctuation prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to proofreading and sentence structure is required.
