IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Several peoples give their opinions that stress is a major problem in todays generation. Now in this generation people take more stress as compared to previous generation. However, some peoples disaggree with this statement and have their point that previous generation takes more stress.
On first side, people whose have opinion that previous generation take more stress thinks that in older generations doesn't have more oportunties than know thoese people ive their simple life and do major hardwork even childrens in thoese generations works nearly as older person neither thay have good clothes, shelter, jobs are are working in major tough conditions. For example in older generations there are not any opportunities like education, hospitals, communications so people fulfil there needs wihout them in very hard conditions.
On other hand people who has point that todays generation has more stress problems thinks that in these days the major issue is mobile phone as mobile phone is now in everyone's hand and when people see other's lifestyle like dress, job, financial conditions then they compare it with themselves this becomes the mother of every stress in which todays generation is living. Other major role is job situation and education is this generaton. Now people face many difficulties in affording education and after this if they are graduated the maor problem is get a job. Jobless is one of the major reason in which every second young person is suffering.
So I strongly aggree that todays generation is sufffering mre in stress as compared to previous generation because there are not a alot of things that becomes need of everyone so that very less are become successful in acheiving them and in previous generation here are very less life needs so many of them can afford.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The essay addresses both viewpoints and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention mobile phones and job competition as sources of modern stress, the arguments remain at a surface level. The discussion regarding previous generations is also quite general, lacking specific historical context or nuanced examples. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph provides a more detailed explanation of the 'why' and 'how' behind your points, rather than just listing them. The position is consistent, but the supporting evidence needs more depth to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive (e.g., 'On first side', 'On other hand'). There are also issues with referencing; for instance, the phrase 'this becomes the mother of every stress' is vague and lacks a clear link to the preceding sentence. The flow between sentences is sometimes disjointed due to grammatical errors, which occasionally makes the logical progression feel forced. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun references would significantly improve the coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. There are frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'disaggree', 'oportunties', 'wihout', 'sufffering') and some awkward word choices, such as 'mother of every stress' or 'jobless is one of the major reason'. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on basic descriptors. To improve, focus on learning collocations related to social issues and stress, and proofread carefully to eliminate basic spelling mistakes that distract the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('people whose have opinion', 'previous generation take'), incorrect pluralization ('peoples'), and missing articles. Complex sentence attempts are often faulty, leading to confusion in meaning. For example, the sentence 'Now people face many difficulties in affording education and after this if they are graduated the maor problem is get a job' is run-on and lacks proper punctuation. Focusing on basic sentence construction and subject-verb agreement is essential for improvement.
