IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Stress in today's world has topped the charts of existing problems. While few people view stress as an extremely large issue due to increasing sufferings of many individuals through it over the period, other believe that the idea of suffering has escalated solely and not the amount of stress itself. This essay discusses both the sides and draws a logical conclusion from them.

Although the new technology brought many positive changes and made everyone's lives more comfortable but it also led to some drawbacks such a elevated stress levels due to increased use of technical devices which puts a load on a person mentally. Majority of the office going folks and even students now rely on their computers, laptops and mobile phones for work which is not only healthy for the body but also for the mind, it can feel draining. In a recent study by NDTV, it was noted that the people working on digital devices suffer more mentally an physically than the ones working offline. It is understandable that using such methods of working are inevitable nowadays but what boosts the stress levels even more is the ambition in the present day generation towards achieving their goals. They are ready cut off sleep and devote all their time to build something they aim at and this leads not only the concerned individuals but also the ones working with them or for them. This situations leads to overload on the mind, skyrocketing the stress levels.

To understand why some masses believe that stress is just exaggerated, we need to realise that in comparison to the past times, currently the awareness about mental health is way more prominent than it use to be. People now aknowledge the fact that wellbeing of one's mental state is immensely important and should not be ignored, hence, the topic of stress and the sufferings from it are well looked at and talked about. The purpose of doing so is to bring the tensions down but some people misinterpret it as exaggeration. Though, it is also visible somewhere that today's generation is more emotionally sensitive aswell. Therefore, the exaggeration of the suffering of stress is also undeniable to some extent.

To conclude the essay, it can be said that as much as there is a prominent increase in stress levels today there is also some hyperbole about it. I opine one should talk about their mental health openly but not exaggerate it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact of technology and the increased awareness of mental health. However, some arguments are slightly under-developed; for instance, the point about previous generations is mentioned but could have been supported with more specific historical context or examples. The position is consistent throughout, and the essay structure effectively covers all parts of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'To understand', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some transitions between sentences could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some minor awkwardness in phrasing occasionally disrupts the progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'topped the charts' and 'skyrocketing the stress levels'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'aknowledge' instead of 'acknowledge' and 'an physically' instead of 'and physically'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Using more precise academic vocabulary would enhance the overall quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'other believe' (should be 'others believe'), 'this situations leads' (should be 'this situation leads'), and 'aswell' (should be 'as well'). Additionally, there are some punctuation and run-on sentence issues, particularly in the second paragraph. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the response.
