IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

While modern society frequently frames stress as an unprecedented crisis, some argue that today's pressure is overstated compared to the severe hardships faced by previous generations. Both perspectives highlight valid points about how human perception and lifestyle changes shape our understanding of mental well-being.

Proponents of the view that modern life is more stressful point to unique psychological and technological pressures. Hyper-connectivity through smartphones and social media blurred the boundaries between work and personal life, creating an "always-on" culture where individuals rarely disconnect. Furthermore, economic realities—such as skyrocketing housing costs, intense workplace competition, and rapid technological shifts—generate chronic mental strain. Unlike past eras where stress was often tied to physical labor, today's stress is largely psychological, constant, and insidious.

Conversely, others contend that modern stress is exaggerated because earlier generations endured significantly higher baseline pressures. Historical eras were defined by world wars, economic depressions, widespread infectious diseases, and severe physical toil without basic modern amenities. However, because psychological terms like "stress" and "burnout" were not part of the common vocabulary, past generations simply endured these burdens without formal diagnosis or media focus. From this viewpoint, modern society has not become more stressful, but rather more vocal and self-aware regarding mental health.

In my opinion, while earlier generations undeniably faced harsher physical threats and survival pressures, modern stress is genuine and uniquely challenging. The shift from physical survival to constant mental overload has created a different, yet equally damaging, form of strain. Modern stress should not be dismissed as an exaggeration; rather, it reflects a shift in the nature of life's difficulties from external physical threats to internal psychological ones.

Ultimately, comparing stresses across eras is less about measuring who suffered more and more about recognizing how technological and social shifts require updated approaches to mental well-being.
