Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides an opinion, though the development is somewhat superficial. The arguments regarding why past generations were under more pressure are underdeveloped and rely on generalizations rather than specific, logical reasoning. The student confuses 'depression' with 'stress' throughout the essay, which impacts the clarity of the argument. While the prompt asks for a discussion of both views, the connection between the two perspectives is weak, and the conclusion does not fully synthesize the arguments presented. The position is clear, but the supporting evidence is limited and lacks depth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is often hindered by awkward transitions and repetitive sentence structures. While cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'In contrast' are used, they are sometimes applied mechanically or incorrectly. For example, 'On the second hand' is not a standard English transition. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of ideas. The paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks a clear topic sentence and supporting detail flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, with frequent spelling errors such as 'diffficulties', 'anxity', 'unemloyment', 'isues', and 'sucessed'. The student frequently uses the word 'depression' when the context clearly refers to 'stress', indicating a lack of precision in word choice. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic language. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey basic meaning, but the persistent errors and lack of variety prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the complex sentences are frequently marred by grammatical errors. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'other says', 'past people trys'), article usage, and sentence fragments. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors is high enough to cause some difficulty for the reader and indicates a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms.
