In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Stress and strain is considerd as the common phenomenon in our social and personal life. Some argue that nowadays people are suffering from more mental pressure than they faced in the past. Others opine that older generation faced more pressure but they handled them adroitly with less pain and people of present age are more ostentious in case of enduring mental pressure. This essay will discuss the both opinions before giving my opinion.

On the one hand, Nowadays people are leading ultramodern and busy lifestyle which is very complex in nature. The ways of life become very intruiged in nature because of the technological development and AI incorporation. For instance, now people of all ages have to acquire some minimal technological knowledges to cope with the modern world as people have to maintain their communication through their cellphones. Moreover people nowadays can reach their basic services through internet access where they have some burdens of technological efficiency.

On the other hand, Although people from the past had simple life style ,they had to do a lot of physilally labour intensified work in order to mainatin their daily life which gave some mental pressure during and after work. For example, when a professional had to check or calculated the repeated counting ,these tedious work gave them a lots of headaches. Moreover, in the past people were living in extended family where mental pressure was very common issue.

In my opinion, todays people are facing more pressure than the people from the past beacause of the complex nature of the work which demanded them to be more dedicated to their work. Moreover blur work life boundaries also give them extra stresses to handle.

In conclusion, people of modern days have to perform tedious and complex but comfortable environment can support them to ease their pressure. People from the past day did labour intensive and manual work and they could take some absolute and complete separation from the work.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the first body paragraph attempts to explain modern stress, the link between 'technological knowledges' and mental pressure is not fully articulated. Similarly, the second paragraph mentions physical labor but fails to clearly explain why this might be perceived as less stressful than modern work. The conclusion introduces new points about 'comfortable environments' that were not previously discussed, which weakens the overall argument. To improve, ensure that each point is supported by a logical explanation rather than just a brief example.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disjointed, such as the transition between the discussion of past physical labor and the mention of extended families. Referencing is generally clear, but the essay would benefit from a more sophisticated use of cohesive devices to improve the overall flow and connectivity between complex ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, but there are several spelling errors ('considerd', 'intruiged', 'physilally', 'mainatin', 'beacause') and some awkward word choices ('ostentious', 'absolute and complete separation'). While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'technological development' and 'labour intensive', the inaccuracies in spelling and collocation occasionally impede the reader's understanding. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on accurate spelling and using collocations that sound more natural in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Stress and strain is considerd', 'ways of life become very intruiged') and missing articles ('in the past people were living in extended family'). While these errors do not completely prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. The student should work on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with verb tenses and pluralization, to ensure that complex structures are formed correctly.
