IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is widely argued that mental stress has become more prevalent in recent decades and poses a significant challenge for the modern society. Conversely others posit that previous generations had to face more psychological pressure in their daily lives but the concept of stress was non-existent. I agree with the former opinion as the fast paced transformation of life has made living more stressful in the modern era.

On one hand, some individuals assert that people back in the day had to face more challenges in their lives comparitively as they did not had the advance technology which could have made life convenient for them. In addition, they had strong family values and could share their emotions with their loved ones which could have eased their mental fatigue. They did not see it as a concerning issue as they were habitual of working under pressurized environments. Moreover, due to lack of research, people in the previous decades had little awareness about the mental health problems and the consequences it could had on their daily lives. However, people still suffered from some type of mental exhaustion and frustration.

With pervasive reach of modern technology, life became more swift and individuals got involved in hectic routines and work schedules. As a result, their relationships with their families deteriorated and they had to deal with different type of emotions on their own. For instance, numerous number of adults now live alone, far from their parents or siblings, consequently they don't have anyone in their lives with whom they can share their feelings. Apart from that, with research in medical education, stress is now seen as a pressing psychological issue and more people are now aware of it than they were in the previous years.

To conclude, while some might argue that stress has become over exaggerated due to ubiquitous use of innovations and advancements in medical field. I believe, that the fast-paced modern life along with the deterioration of social values has made stress more prevalent in the contemporary era.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact of technology on social isolation and the historical lack of awareness regarding mental health. However, some arguments could be more thoroughly developed. For instance, the point about previous generations being 'habitual of working under pressurized environments' is mentioned but not fully explored in terms of how this relates to the modern perception of stress. Overall, the position is consistent throughout, and the response meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints and the author's opinion. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'Moreover', 'Consequently', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the ambiguous use of 'it' in 'the consequences it could had'. Nevertheless, the logical structure is clear, and the paragraphing contributes to the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses some good collocations and topic-specific language, such as 'mental fatigue', 'pervasive reach', 'hectic routines', and 'pressing psychological issue'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'numerous number of adults' (redundant) and 'comparitively' (spelling error). Additionally, 'over exaggerated' is a tautology, as 'exaggerated' already implies an excess. Despite these minor slips, the range of vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning with some precision, and the errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the student attempts complex sentences, there are several grammatical errors that persist. Examples include 'they did not had the advance technology' (should be 'did not have'), 'consequences it could had' (should be 'could have had'), and 'numerous number of adults' (awkward phrasing). There are also issues with article usage and verb forms. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs in the past tense.
