IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response is significantly under-length at only 107 words, failing to meet the 250-word minimum requirement. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. The essay fails to discuss both views in any depth and does not provide a clear, developed opinion. The argument is cut off mid-sentence, meaning the response is incomplete and lacks the necessary development of ideas required for a higher band score. To improve, you must ensure you address all parts of the prompt—discussing both perspectives and providing a clear opinion—while meeting the minimum word count.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear logical progression due to its incomplete nature. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the ideas are fragmented and the text ends abruptly. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences and ideas effectively. For example, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraph is weak. To improve, you should use linking words such as 'furthermore', 'however', or 'consequently' to connect your ideas and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence followed by supporting evidence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'spending of life' and 'non-awareness' are unnatural and imprecise. There is an attempt to use topic-related terms like 'depression' and 'anxiety', but the range is too limited to demonstrate flexibility. The word choice often feels awkward, which hinders the clarity of your argument. To improve, focus on learning collocations and more academic vocabulary related to social issues and historical comparisons, rather than relying on simple, everyday language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains several grammatical errors, such as 'in past' (should be 'in the past') and 'member of the societies' (should be 'members of society'). Sentence structures are generally simple, and there is a lack of complex grammatical forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around punctuation marks. Because the text is incomplete, it is difficult to assess a full range of structures, but the current errors and limited sentence variety indicate a need for more focus on basic grammatical accuracy and sentence complexity.
