IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Stress is increasingly described as a serious issue in the modern society. While some people believe that individuals today experience more stress than the previous generations, others argue that this problem is overstated and the previous generations faced same pressure , anxiety and hardships. In my opinion, although life was physically harder in the past, the nature and intensity of stress today have genuinely increased.

Those who believe that stress levels are high now point to several modern factors. Firstly, the workplace has become far more competitive. Employees are expected to be available 24/7 due to digital commitments, Emails and social platforms, which blurs the line between personal and professional life.

Secondly, social media creates constant pressure to appear successful and happy. For instance, young people often compares their lives to idealized images online, leading to anxiety and low self esteem. Finally, the fast pace of modern life, with rising living costs and career uncertainty, leaves little time for relaxation.

On the other hand, people who think stress is exagerated argue that previous generations endured far more severe challenges. In the past, many people faced wars, poverty and physically demanding jobs without any modern healthcare facilities, any advancement that we have now in our prime time.

So, in my conclusion, stress is not that thing which compares with the past and present, who suffers more, old generation or new generation, both these generations suffers from these pressures and cruel environment but the difference is today's generational stress is digitally oriented but previous generation faced it physically. Stress is same but circumstances behind the stress is different.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. Your ideas are relevant, such as the impact of digital connectivity and the physical hardships of the past. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and lacks the sophistication needed for a higher band, as it struggles to synthesize the arguments effectively. To improve, ensure that your supporting examples are more fully explained rather than just listed, and aim for a more cohesive summary of your position in the final paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use transition signals like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. However, the flow within the final paragraph is somewhat disjointed, and the sentence structure in the conclusion is slightly awkward, which affects the overall progression. The use of cohesive devices is generally effective, but there is room for more variety to avoid a mechanical feel. Ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single clear idea to enhance the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'idealized images', 'career uncertainty', and 'physically demanding'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'exagerated' instead of 'exaggerated', and some awkward phrasing in the conclusion, such as 'not that thing which compares'. While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some word choices are slightly imprecise. To reach a higher band, focus on using collocations more accurately and proofreading for common spelling mistakes to ensure your writing is polished and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('young people often compares') and punctuation errors (unnecessary capitalization of 'Emails'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and ensure that your complex sentences are punctuated correctly. Practicing the use of relative clauses and conditional structures could also help increase your grammatical range.
