IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

People are suffering more from stress than those in the past, also it is considered that the issue is substantial throughout various societies. But in actually people only pretend that they are coping with more stress and the individuals in the past were under greater stress but the whole idea does not existed. I agree with the views and this essay will discuss both of them briefly.

On the one hand, in the modern world and excessive population people faces more stress then previously. Firstly, there is too much competition especially in the job market, people got under pressure which push them towards depression. Secondly, financial burden is another cause, everyone wants much money for better future and if they fail they depressed. Social media has also an impact they want to copy celebrities however, they can not afford and pushed toward tension. For example, university student today often face intense competition for jobs while dealing with academic pressure.

On the other hand, from the stress people take wrong meanings because people in the past were more in tension but it was not recognised as a psychological problem. People of that time were facing continuous wars, murders and crime due to which they were highly depressed. Hard work was a major problem because it needed strength or power and resulted in severe tiredness. People do not have facilities like healthcare, medical tools as of todays people. A lot of pressure was builted on poor women and social workers these were all the challenges people faced during that period. For instance, people in the past often worked in dangerous factories for long hours and had no safety measurements.

In conclusion, I would like to say today's generation is very lucky with all the advancements naming technology, jobs and opportunities for making money instead they even remain in stress. While the actual stress faced ever by people were previous generations because they had no such opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on stress and providing a clear personal opinion. The writer presents relevant ideas, such as modern job competition and social media pressures for the first view, and historical challenges like wars and dangerous working conditions for the second view. However, some ideas are under-developed or expressed with a lack of clarity, such as the awkward phrasing regarding previous generations. The position is stated, but the explanation sometimes wanders due to language barriers. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for a Band 5.5 or 6.0, settling at 5.5 due to limited development and some unclear argumentation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four distinct paragraphs with a discernible overall structure, including an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. However, progression is frequently hindered by awkward transitions and confusing cohesion. For instance, phrases like 'On the other hand, from the stress people take wrong meanings' do not logically connect the argument. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often inaccurate or mechanical (e.g., 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'On the other hand'). Paragraphing is present, but internal referencing and logical flow require improvement. These limitations place the response comfortably within the Band 5.0 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited and occasionally repetitive vocabulary, with several noticeable errors that restrict precision. Examples include 'in actually' instead of 'in reality', 'does not existed' for 'did not exist', and 'they depressed' or 'they pushed toward tension'. While some attempts are made to use less common vocabulary like 'substantial' and 'psychological problem', inaccurate word choices and word formation errors (e.g., 'builted' instead of 'built', 'measurements' instead of 'measures') cause some difficulty for the reader. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, matching the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('people faces', 'People do not have'), tense errors ('did not existed', 'stress faced ever by people were previous generations'), and run-on sentences ('People are suffering more from stress than those in the past, also it is considered...'). Punctuation is also problematic in places. While simple sentences are generally understandable, attempts at complex structures frequently result in faulty syntax that impedes smooth reading. This corresponds to a Band 5.0 level.
