IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is widely believed by some individuals that stress became a serious issue nowdays as they think people suffer from more stress then they did in past.others argue that old generations were under more pressure as compare to present. In my opinion people are facing more problems in present time which cause stress as compare to past.
The primary reason why individuals are suffering from stress issues then they did in past is because working for whole week without taking rest and doing jobs continuesly for every week increase the stress level. For example if people are working for every day without taking vacations it will affect there mental health and they donot have time to spend with there family and friends to share there problems. Moreover, competition level has increased in every field in which individuals have to perform good to achieve there goals and they overthink about these which cause stress.
However, others feel that people suffer from more stress in past because in old times there was no technology to do any type of work or to solve the problems, individuals have to work lonely which cause the stress and increase the anxiety level.Furthermore, they donot have much facilities to survive in which they face many problems like education, healthcare, malls up to so on.
In conclusion, it is restated although people face many problems jn past which increase the stress but in present there are many problems as compare to past which directly target the stress.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that stress is greater today due to modern pressures and that previous generations suffered more without the label—and gives a clear personal opinion. However, the ideas are relatively basic and lack fully extended, sophisticated supporting examples. Furthermore, the length check indicates that the essay contains 247 words, falling slightly short of the 250-word minimum requirement. Consequently, this minor under-length constraint affects the overall development and caps the score at Band 5.5. While the student attempts to present arguments regarding work hours, competition, and past technological limitations, these points remain underdeveloped.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs representing an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing basic organizational structure. However, logical progression is sometimes hindered by abrupt transitions and repetitive phrasing (e.g., 'then they did in past' and 'as compare to past'). Cohesive devices are used rather mechanically and inadequately at times, and referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'there' used instead of 'their'). Paragraphing is present, but the overall flow feels slightly disjointed due to the lack of flexible cohesive links. These features align closely with Band 5.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally repetitive and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common terms such as 'overthink', 'anxiety level', and 'healthcare', but there are noticeable word-choice errors and spelling mistakes, such as 'nowdays' instead of 'nowadays', 'continuesly' instead of 'continuously', and 'jn' instead of 'in'. Collocations are occasionally awkward, such as 'target the stress' in the conclusion. The range is limited, and these frequent minor lexical errors place the response firmly in the Band 5.0 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('if people are working for every day...'). However, control over grammar and punctuation is weak, leading to frequent errors. Run-on sentences and missing punctuation are common throughout the text, and errors in verb tenses (e.g., 'stress became a serious issue nowdays' mixed with present tense) and possessive adjectives (using 'there' for 'their') cause some difficulty for the reader. Complex structures are often faulty. These limitations reflect the descriptors for Band 5.0.
