IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In todays fast world every individual is subrodinatly construct and emerge thier self with the world , everyone has thier life where they are struggling for thier path and has to be in somewhere beacuse of this exaggerating and fast life people also suffer alot they have to perform in diffrent place they have to survive in this capitalstic world beacuse all of this hurdel this days of adults are quite deppresed and living quite pressuring life beacuse of modernisation even the youth has less friend with whome they can share thier things or they just having a realxe time social media also play an massive role for this problem beacuse adults find it more easy to make social media friend they dont have to meet them or having any pressure to mantaining friendship with someone and yes this also affect to find some loved once too,

beside if we had to disccuss about old time or the previous generation it is quite easier the lived a healthy and stress free life beacause they socialised alot they had good realtion with thier family, mentor even with the realtives so they had people with whome they can share anything even in previous time the world is not much fast and capitalised that what it is in current days so they dont have to run for specific lifestyle they get it easily beacse of no compidtion perhapse people also earn that time but they prirotised there loved one first so this are the reason they dont feel fatiuge and exaggerated and this this i disccus with my father so yes this is quite my own experince to.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to discuss both views regarding modern versus past stress levels and includes a personal opinion, touching upon ideas such as capitalistic pressures, social media, and family support. However, the development of these ideas is severely restricted by severe language barriers. The argument attempts to address all parts of the prompt, but it lacks clear, extended support, often drifting into generalisations without robust examples. The position is discernible but not fully articulated throughout. Due to the limited development and lack of clear structure, this falls under Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The response exhibits profound organizational issues. The entire text is written as just two massive run-on paragraphs. Within these paragraphs, sentences lack proper punctuation and run together, such as in the opening sentence starting with 'In todays fast world every individual...'. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or repetitive, with excessive reliance on basic connectors like 'beacuse' and 'and'. There is no clear overall progression of ideas, and referencing is frequently unclear, making the text difficult to follow. This aligns with Band 4.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is basic and heavily constrained. There are numerous severe spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'subrodinatly', 'hurdel', 'deppresed', 'mantaining', 'loved once', 'compidtion', and 'fatiuge'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'capitalstic' and 'exaggerating', but these are used inaccurately or misspelled. The limited range of vocabulary and pervasive errors cause considerable strain for the reader, placing the response firmly at Band 4.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

Grammatical control is extremely weak. The entire submission is characterised by a lack of basic punctuation, capitalization, and sentence boundaries, resulting in massive run-on sentences with virtually no periods. There are frequent errors in verb tense, subject-verb agreement, and word forms (e.g., 'they lived a healthy and stress free life beacause they socialised alot'). Complex sentence structures are non-existent or completely faulty. These pervasive, frequent errors severely distort meaning and impede communication, corresponding to Band 4.
