IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

According to my point of view, stress is more in now a days. This stress can be due to some conditions like increasing burden of work, mobile phone, exclude gatherings from life and many other things. However previous generations had no much stress because at that time there were no mobile phones. People live their life simply without any tensions.

Today generation is suffering from stress due to a great competition among themselves. They are trying to compete eachother. So, they feel pressure and taike stress of work.

Mobile is also a big problem or cause of stress. It reduces the passion in man and also children are addicted to mobile phone.

Kids are playing different games that can also cause stress.

In the past, people are trying to busy their life in different works like farming, cattling and in many other works. The stress in this generation can also be due to modernization like lengthy education that creates a big burden on students and they undergo depression. And pressure on workers can be due to daily work without any leave. They need minimum 4 leaves in a month to take rest and have to fresh their mind for next work.

Another reason of stress in this generation is due to lack of planning trips or tours in Northen or some other beautiful areas. All people including kids have to plan tours to fresh their mind. There they can also explore many new things like lakes, hills and animals.

So, this can be also a way to loose stress and people can live their life peacefully and can work more effectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to discuss both views regarding modern versus past stress levels and provides a personal opinion, stating that modern stress is significantly higher due to factors like work burden, technology, and competition. However, the development of ideas is limited and disjointed. While the prompt asks to discuss both views and give an opinion, the arguments lack sufficient extension and relevant evidence, relying instead on broad generalizations such as 'mobile phones' and 'lengthy education.' Furthermore, the paragraphing is underdeveloped, which hinders the overall task response. The writer expresses a clear position at the beginning ('According to my point of view, stress is more in now a days'), but the lack of substantial depth and support keeps the response at a Band 5 level according to the task achievement criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks clear logical organization and progression throughout. Paragraphing is highly fragmented, with several single-sentence or very short paragraphs (such as 'Kids are playing different games that can also cause stress.') that disrupt the flow of ideas. Cohesive devices are used minimally and repetitively (e.g., 'However', 'So', 'And'), and referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the train of thought. While there is a basic overarching structure attempting an introduction, body points, and a conclusion, the mechanical nature of the cohesion and the lack of a smooth, logical progression place this response firmly in the Band 5 category.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting words such as 'modernization', 'competition', 'depressed', and 'peacefully'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as 'stress is more in now a days', 'exclude gatherings from life', 'cattling' (instead of cattle farming), and 'loose stress' (instead of release or relieve stress). These inaccuracies occasionally cause confusion or strain for the reader. Although common vocabulary is adequate to convey basic ideas, the frequent word-choice errors and lack of sophisticated phrasing prevent the essay from reaching a higher band, making Band 5 an appropriate score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic coordination. Attempts at complex or multi-clause sentences are frequently faulty, as seen in structures like 'The stress in this generation can also be due to modernization like lengthy education that creates a big burden on students and they undergo depression.' There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('People live their life', 'people are trying'), missing articles ('in Northen or some other beautiful areas'), and preposition mistakes. These errors occur throughout the text and cause some difficulty for the reader, aligning the grammar performance with the Band 5 descriptors.
