IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

it is true that some indivisuals believes that stress is now regarded as a major problem and the stree is more than the past generations .while others think that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated though the past generations had most stress than present time.people of every generation people had there stress ,some indivisual have more though others .

on the other hand ,nowadays people face many dificulties because of some peoples working pressure , student has study pressure and others has other indivisual problem.nevertheless they have to do that for going towards the future of success.in present day worker has lots of work and they have to finish it in time also they have to go there working place by vehicles and it is also a problem because they have to wait in traffic jam for long time.for example in my country teachers provide lots of homework towards students though the teacher do not prove them the proper knowledge about the homework because every class has at least 50 student and they can not give them one to one care.for that reason students have to suffer and they must be mentaly sick for there study pressure .not only student but also all over the age people face this tipe of problem in there daily life.

on the other hand,in past people do not have any company job also students do not need to study hard because that time that was not started properly.although they have to work for there live and there family also they have to find food because that time they do not have the proper food source .for example people were worry that time for finiding food for there daily protine that is nothing for this future world.

in conclusion,i agree with present day stress is more than past generation .both had stress level but present day has various reason of stress and it is very hard to overcome that.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on modern versus past stress and provides the writer's own opinion in the conclusion. However, the ideas are relatively basic and lack depth and well-supported examples. While the student attempts to contrast present work and study pressures with past difficulties such as food scarcity, the arguments tend to over-generalize and remain somewhat superficial. For instance, the example about teachers and large class sizes is relevant but not fully connected to a broader analytical argument. The position is clear, but the overall development of ideas corresponds best to the Band 5 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which shows some basic organisation. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression and logical flow. Cohesive devices are often misused or absent, and punctuation and spacing errors severely disrupt the natural transition between ideas. For example, starting multiple paragraphs with 'on the other hand' incorrectly signals contrasting points when the text is simply introducing new supporting points. Referencing is frequently unclear, and the mechanical errors in sentence boundaries mean the arrangement is only partially coherent, aligning with Band 4.5 or rounded to 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently impeded by numerous spelling errors such as 'indivisuals', 'stree', 'dificulties', 'mentaly', and 'tipe'. The student attempts some less common terms like 'exaggerated', but these are outweighed by inadequate word choices and spelling inaccuracies that occasionally cause strain for the reader. There is a lack of precise collocation and appropriate stylistic control, placing the lexical range firmly at Band 4.0, though the overall communicative intent is still understandable, allowing for a 4.5 or 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences or poorly constructed complex sentences joined incorrectly by commas or conjunctions. There are persistent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'student has study pressure', 'people do not have'), and missing articles. Punctuation is largely neglected, with frequent spacing and capitalization issues throughout the text. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and distort meaning in several places, matching the Band 4 descriptors.
