IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Now a days stress is considered a huge obstacle . While some people belive that modern life has made people more stressed , others argue that previous generation suffered greater presure due to wars.Meanwhile, I belive that previous people faced serious hardship so they feel more stressed.

In one hand, people argue that people experienced higher level of stress than in the past. People feel stressed due theire mdern life . It is happen when they have fased financial difficulties to get the higher staus in society. Take an example, a survey report of Germany shows 98% of youth is going to stress for addiction of theire modern life style .Thus modern lifestyle is indeed stressful for humanity.

While on the other hand, others believe that previous generations experienced greater pressure and hardship. They faced for the authority on theire own area to cope up theire limited facalites ,to get theire goals. For instance, Allam Iqbal poetry in bal-e-jaberal book shows how hardship they faced in past and how much they felt stress.

However I believe that hardship has made old generation more stressed . They did not have any facalites such as hospitals and technology .For example professor williom in harverd shows in theire studies how these hardship encourage people to felt more stressed and took participate on war.

To sum up, previous felt these stressed due to theire harship they faced in theire life while, modern life has the reason of stress new generation but In my opinion war and poor facalites has the reason of stress.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address all parts of the task by discussing both views—that modern life is more stressful and that past generations faced greater hardship—while also providing a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times confusing. For instance, the prompt asks to discuss the view that stress is a major problem today versus the view that previous generations were under more pressure. The student mentions that "previous generation suffered greater presure due to wars," but the supporting arguments and examples (such as referencing poetry and a professor named 'williom in harverd') are vague, barely developed, and contain factual or expression errors. The position is stated, but the overall task fulfilment suffers from weak argumentation and lack of clear elaboration, aligning best with a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is divided into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs discussing opposing views, a concluding paragraph with the author's stance, and a final summary. However, progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing sentence sequencing. Phrases like "In one hand" (instead of 'On the one hand') and "While on the other hand" are misused, as the first body paragraph actually argues for modern stress, matching the first view. Cohesive devices are repetitive and often inaccurate ("It is happen when", "Thus modern lifestyle"). Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion fails to create a smooth, logical flow, which limits the score to Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a very limited and repetitive vocabulary with frequent spelling and word-choice errors that occasionally impede communication. Examples include "belive" for believe, "presure" for pressure, "theire" for their, "mdern" for modern, "fased" for faced, "staus" for status, "facalites" for facilities, and "williom in harverd". While there are attempts at less common words like "obstacle", "addiction", and "hardship", the pervasive mechanical and lexical inaccuracies restrict the vocabulary range. Communication is strained in multiple sentences due to incorrect collocations and misspellings, placing this writing firmly at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on positive achievement of basic topic-related lexis.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The student demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic complex forms that frequently contain errors. Errors are very frequent throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., "previous generation suffered", "so they feel more stressed"), incorrect tense usage ("previous felt these stressed"), and poor clause linking ("It is happen when they have fased financial difficulties"). Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic (e.g., extra spaces before punctuation, lowercase 'I' in some instances). Because errors occur in almost every sentence and occasionally obscure meaning, the writing falls into the Band 4.0 descriptor category.
