IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this modern era, nowadys stress is observed as a serious problem, and people think they suffer more stress than in the past , some other people feel that the amount of stress people have today is described as bigger and the also say previous genrations were more under pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist than. this essay will discuss both the views.

To commence with, in today's time people often have to work for long hours to meet strict deadlines and technology only means that employees can recieve work related messages emails even after work which they find difficult to feel completely relaxed even after working hours and also they could not seprate their personal professional lives For example, an office worker may finish work at a certain time but continue answering emails and attending online meetings at home also. moreover in this fast paced world , social media exposes individuals to other lifestyles, carees, relationaships and achievments. this can make individuals feel that they are not successful enough and create constant anxiety.

on the other side, in past people had fewer technological facilities , less job security and physically demanding work. therefore previous generation had to deal with problems that could seriously affect their families and survival. For example, workers in factories or agriculture often performed physically exhausting jobs for many hours without the modern equipment available today.

I believe that both the generations have experienced considerable pressure, but the nature of stress has changed today. therefore, in my opinion modern people are not necessarily facing difficult lives overall, but they are exposed to more continuous psychological pressure than many previous generations.

In conclusion, although previous generations also faced many difficulties and pressure, I believe that stress has become a more serious issue in modern society. Long working hours, constant use of technology and social pressure have created new sources of stress. Therefore, while the amount of stress today may sometimes be exaggerated, modern people still face significant psychological pressure in their daily lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views (that modern stress is a major problem and that it is exaggerated or that past generations faced more pressure) and clearly stating a personal opinion. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the discussion of modern technology, long working hours, and social media comparisons, as well as the historical context of physically demanding work and lack of technological facilities. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise in places, and some arguments are slightly repetitive, particularly in the introduction and conclusion. Overall, the task is well addressed, earning a solid Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay is clearly organised into logical paragraphs, following an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each view, a personal opinion paragraph, and a conclusion. There is a clear overall progression. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the opening sentence contains a run-on structure with inadequate punctuation ("...past , some other people..."). Cohesive devices such as "To commence with", "moreover", and "on the other side" are used, but referencing is occasionally weak, and paragraph transitions could be smoother. These issues place the response firmly at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as "fast paced world", "psychological pressure", and "physically demanding work". However, there are notable spelling errors ("nowadys", "recieve", "seprate", "carees", "relationaships", "achievments", "genrations") and word choice slips that detract from the overall quality. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, as the intended meaning remains clear throughout the essay. This performance aligns with the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses and participial phrases such as "exposing individuals to other lifestyles" and "workers in factories or agriculture often performed...". However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are run-on sentences with comma splices in the introduction and body paragraphs, and missing capitalisation at the beginning of sentences (e.g., "on the other side"). While there are frequent error-free clauses, the persistence of punctuation and structural slips prevents the essay from reaching a higher band, placing it at Band 6.0.
