Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to discuss both views regarding modern stress and provides a personal opinion, which aligns with the prompt requirements. However, the development of ideas is limited and sometimes unclear due to the language barrier. For example, the argument regarding the first view relies heavily on a single, personal anecdote about a friend's breakup rather than general societal trends. Similarly, the second view regarding people being attention seekers is stated rather than fully explored or supported. The student's position is discernible in the introduction and conclusion, but the overall task is addressed only partially, as the arguments lack depth, detailed elaboration, and formal academic support. This places the response firmly within the Band 5 criteria for this category.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an attempt at structural organisation. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by poor cohesion and abrupt shifts. Transitional phrases like 'To embark with' are misused, and basic cohesive devices are either inadequate or repetitive. Paragraphing is attempted, but individual paragraphs lack internal unity and clear progression. For instance, the second paragraph jumps abruptly from general youth difficulties to a specific personal anecdote without proper bridging. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as seen in the ambiguous use of pronouns. Overall, these cohesion and organisation limitations match the requirements for a Band 5 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used throughout the essay is limited and basic, with frequent lexical errors that impact the clarity of the text. Examples of awkward word choices and non-standard collocations include 'mentlly problems', 'carrer opporitunities', and 'society pressure'. There are also recurrent spelling and morphological errors, such as 'difficulities', 'extracircullar', and 'exaggerated' used grammatically incorrectly. While the student attempts to use less common terms like 'overthinking' and 'attention seeker', their control over lexical features is weak, and the repetition of basic words restricts the range. These characteristics reflect the standard of Band 4 vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences alongside frequent attempts at complex structures that are consistently faulty. There are persistent errors in basic grammar, tense usage, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'they has been do', 'person person face', and 'we can reduce for making different things'. Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic, with missing capitals at the beginning of sentences and missing commas. These frequent errors frequently strain the reader and obscure the intended meaning, which aligns closely with the Band 4 descriptors for grammatical accuracy.
