IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that modern life has more stress and that previous generations suffered equally if not more—and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. Ideas are relevant, touching on modern issues such as inflation, social media, and long working hours, as well as historical hardships like hard physical labor and lack of medical facilities. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, with brief unsupported assertions rather than fully elaborated arguments. For instance, the mention that 'previous generations were under more pressure' is supported by general statements about hard work rather than specific examples. This places the response comfortably in Band 6, as it addresses the prompt adequately but lacks the deeper extension and rigorous support characteristic of a Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay has a recognizable overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs discussing both views, and a concluding opinion. However, the internal coherence and paragraphing are weak. The second paragraph groups multiple distinct ideas—social media, modern pace, inflation, financial crisis, and lack of sleep—into a single block without clear transitions, making it feel disjointed. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate, such as starting sentences abruptly without logical links, and referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'they' or 'these issues' used without precise antecedents). Furthermore, paragraph breaks are poorly utilized, leading to an unbalanced structure. These cohesion and paragraphing issues prevent the essay from achieving a Band 6, placing it firmly at Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for communicating basic ideas, featuring topical terms like 'depression', 'anxiety', 'inflation', and 'financial crisis'. However, there are numerous word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'mellinials' (spelling), 'Modren' (spelling), 'More you social' (grammatical misuse of adjective as a verb), 'uncontrolable' (spelling), 'by theirself' (incorrect reflexive pronoun), and 'persistant' (spelling). The student attempts some less common vocabulary, but frequent inaccuracies in spelling and word formation restrict the range and occasionally impede the reader's understanding. Overall, the lexical control aligns best with the Band 5 descriptors due to noticeable spelling and lexical errors that cause some difficulty.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'If a person is not able to manage...', 'Although in past people also faced...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, subject-verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries (run-on sentences and comma splices, such as 'Today is the era of social media.More you social more you feel depressed.'). Errors such as 'in earlies do not get enough food so the also faced' and missing plural markers frequently disrupt the flow. Because errors are persistent and affect basic sentence mechanics, the response corresponds to a Band 5 for grammatical range and accuracy.
