IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Today's time the stress is extremely exaggerated. In my opinion the People had stress in past time but they were not familiar with the term. They did not know what is anxiety and depression. on that time there were not many psychiatrist and if there were psychiatrist then people never went to them because they thought that psychologically ill people deserve psychiatrist. They always absorb all the anxiety or depression. They thought everything will be ok on its on time and terms.

If we talk about todays era then people are depressed but they are aware from this illness. They know that depression can cause many problems internally like upset stomach, gut health issue etc. These days people are more depressed than past one because its a digital era people used to see screens whole time. Infact this screen time really effect our dopamine. That true that everything has advantages and disadvantages but watching reels all the day also causes the stress. i genuinely feel that my elders have more patience than me and my generation however my generation has more patience than my youngers.

For example people get alot of stress when they watch reels on social media how people are successful and deep down they wish i would be on that place but they have no idea about the suffering of that influencer. They watch the successful people who are bove 40 and they do not aware of this that this particular person achieved everything after doing efforts of 20 years and they just wish to get everything in their 20s. so i genuinely feel this generation is more stressful because of phones.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear view that people today experience more stress, and you offer relevant reasons, especially social-media comparison and greater awareness of mental health. The example of younger people wanting the success they see online helps illustrate your position. However, the task asks you to discuss both views, and the earlier-generation perspective is only briefly acknowledged: you say people in the past had stress but lacked the terminology and support, without developing the argument that their lives may have involved greater pressure. Your discussion therefore addresses the topic only partially, and some claims, such as screens affecting dopamine, need clearer explanation or support. Develop each side with a specific example, then state your judgement after weighing them against each other.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic overall structure: it introduces your view, explains present-day stress, and gives a social-media example. The example is relevant, and phrases such as “For example” help signal its purpose. However, progression between the two viewpoints is not consistently clear. The first paragraph focuses on past attitudes, while the second shifts to current awareness and screen use without explicitly contrasting the arguments. Several ideas are joined in long, loosely connected sentences, and “however” in the patience comparison does not clearly show how that point supports the main argument. Use separate paragraphs for each view and a conclusion, and make links between claims explicit rather than relying on repeated “because” and “but.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “anxiety,” “depression,” “psychologically ill,” and “social media,” so the reader can follow the subject. There are also attempts to express specific ideas, such as comparing generations’ patience and describing online success. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, including “Today's time,” “aware from this illness,” “absorb all the anxiety,” and “on its on time and terms.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Aim for more precise phrases such as “nowadays,” “aware of these conditions,” and “cope with anxiety.” Check spelling and word forms, including “a lot,” “affect,” and “above,” and avoid repeating “stress” and “people” when a more specific term is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a conditional-style explanation of how social-media comparisons affect people. However, complex sentences are often difficult to control, and frequent errors in sentence boundaries, tense, agreement, articles, and punctuation can interrupt reading. For example, “They did not know what is anxiety” needs consistent past-tense reporting, while “there were not many psychiatrist” has a plural-agreement error. The opening also contains an unnecessary capital in “the People,” and several sentences begin with lowercase “on” or “i.” Practise building one main clause at a time, then add subordinate clauses with accurate tense and punctuation. Proofread for complete sentences and consistent capitalisation.
