IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is often argued that the major problem in the societies is taking stress and much people suffer from that problem. While some people believe that the generations did not aware from the word, stress, they only under the pressure, but did not know what kind of that pressure they got and today`s people become exaggerated from stress. I completey agree with both views and effectively respect the statement because stress is now big devastating problem and in the past also it was so much exaggerated.
The primary reason why I agree with this view is that people face more hurdles, difficulties and taking pressue to overcome stress these days. This is because people are more hurry in works and always doing something and not relaxing themselves, this is the main reason today`s generation face more stress than previous generations. For example, the Students, workers, staffs and teachers are all always in doing something unnecessary or necessary things and have no time to relax themselves.
Another important reason is that older people also did works, even they did works for hours but the one thing they did in the past was to do exercises, yoga and take breaks from routine works that result they suffer less from anxiety and depression. But the thing is, they were also feel exaggerated from some vast amount of pressure such as social, economical, financial, health and educational, and these factors influenced older generation too much and they were in stress for long times and did not know how to solve this serious issue. For example, in previous times, people did works for long hours but in the return they got less amount of money and did not fulfill their basic needs and requirements, resulting to mentally and emotonally problems and people suffer those mentally disease later known as stress.
In conclusion, I completely agree with both views and respectfully saying that stress is one of the most big problem people suffer. My opinion according to those opinions is that we should do works, and daily basic activities but we should manage these activities in organized way and give priority to health first.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both perspectives and give a personal position, especially in the introduction and conclusion. The discussion of present-day stress is relevant: you link busy routines and lack of rest to pressure, and the example of students and workers helps illustrate this. You also recognise that earlier generations faced financial, social and health pressures. However, the position is not consistently clear: saying you agree with both views does not explain how you reconcile the claim that stress is greater today with the claim that it was exaggerated in the past. Some points, such as older people exercising and taking breaks, are asserted without enough explanation or support. Clarify each view and develop a more precise comparison before stating your conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the paragraphs broadly separate present-day and past pressures. Linking phrases such as “The primary reason” and “Another important reason” help signal the sequence. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because several claims are joined together without clearly showing their relationship. For example, the second body paragraph moves from exercise and breaks to older people feeling pressure, then to low wages and unmet needs. The conclusion repeats the position but does not resolve the contrast between the two views. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example directly to the point it supports; vary transitions rather than relying mainly on formulaic sequencing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “hurdles,” “anxiety,” “depression,” and “financial” pressure, and these choices show an effort to discuss causes and effects. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “stress,” “pressure,” and “works,” while several word choices or collocations are inaccurate and sometimes make meaning unclear. Examples include “taking pressue to overcome stress,” “people become exaggerated from stress,” and “in the return they got less amount of money.” Spelling errors such as “completey,” “emotonally,” and “pressue” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of topic phrases and check whether words naturally combine; this will make your arguments clearer and more appropriate for an academic essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “while,” and “but,” so there is some variety. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors can make the reader work to understand the intended meaning. For example, “people are more hurry in works” has problems with the adjective form and sentence pattern, while “the one thing they did in the past was to do exercises” is awkwardly constructed. Verb forms and agreement are also inconsistent, as in “they were also feel” and “people suffer those mentally disease.” Articles, plurals and punctuation need more reliable control. Practise building accurate sentences around one main idea, then add subordinate clauses only when their grammar is secure.
