IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Stress is considered as the serious issue in some areas, while it is believed that people mostly suffer from their past deeds. Some people think that le level of stress has been increased. They say that people from olde ages had more pressure than this.
Stress is obviously one of the major problem arising these days. Every single person have the issue of stress. We can see everywhere people admiting in the hospitals due to tension or stress. Now the question arises that what are the reasons behind this issue? The answer to this question varies from person to person. The things that need to be understand are family issues like violence between husband and wife, fight among children or any other emotional matter that could lead to hypertension. Even people of these ages do not want to share their family matters and thus they start breaking their feelings internally. In this way they become the patient of hypertension.
On the other hand, people from previous generations had minimal problem of stress or you can say no stress. They never used to fight and never become the part of any stressful situation. People of old ages had a very peaceful and healthy life. Though, there were less resources and they were technically poor people but the status does not define the health. They never visited any doctor because there was no need of a physician. Even husband and wife used to sit and solve their matters calmly.
In my opinion, people from these ages suffer from more stress. Because they may have guilt of any action that they did in the past.
On a serious note, people need to know about their actions and should not take stress. There is humanity in peacefulness.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to discuss both views and gives a personal opinion, but the task is addressed only partially. The paragraph about current stress mentions family conflict and emotional pressure, while the discussion of earlier generations mainly asserts that they had “minimal problem of stress” and a “peaceful and healthy life,” without explaining why their pressures may have been greater. The opinion is also unclear: the essay first says people today suffer more, then attributes this to guilt about past actions, which does not clearly support the comparison. Several claims, such as that people in the past “never used to fight,” are too broad and unsupported. To strengthen the response, explain the pressures faced in each period, compare them directly, and state a consistent position supported by specific examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, with separate sections for present-day stress, previous generations, and the writer’s opinion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” help signal a change in viewpoint. However, the overall progression is not clear because the opening is difficult to follow and the final opinion does not connect logically to the preceding discussion. The repeated references to stress and the sequence of rhetorical questions and claims do not build a sustained argument. Some links are also mechanical, and the final sentence, “There is humanity in peacefulness,” does not clearly conclude the essay’s reasoning. Improve cohesion by giving each paragraph one clear purpose, linking examples to the main claim, and using the conclusion to restate the comparison and your position.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant vocabulary, including “emotional matter,” “hypertension,” “resources,” and “stressful situation,” so the topic is generally identifiable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, sometimes making the meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “people mostly suffer from their past deeds” does not express the task’s comparison of stress across generations, and “admitting in the hospitals” is not a natural way to describe hospital admissions. There are also spelling errors such as “le,” “olde,” and “admiting.” Aim for precise, natural phrases such as “experience psychological pressure,” “be admitted to hospital,” and “previous generations,” and avoid repeating broad terms like “people” and “stress.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay includes some attempts at complex sentences, for example, “Even people of these ages do not want to share their family matters and thus they start breaking their feelings internally.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or unclear. Examples include “Stress is considered as the serious issue,” “Every single person have,” and “the things that need to be understand,” which show problems with articles, agreement, and verb forms. The sentence beginning “In my opinion” is followed by a fragment: “Because they may have guilt…” Work on forming complete sentences and checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and infinitive or participle forms. More accurate control of these basics would make the argument easier to follow.
