IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is often argued that stress is now the basic problem in many societies. Today's people have more stress than in the past while some people believe that, people in the past centuries suffered from more anxiety rather than today. Now people feel more stress but did not found. I will discuss both these views with examples and reasons. At the end, i will give my own opinion.
Firstly, most people think that stress affects more today's people because they have more responsibilities. People have work load in their mind. Some people have no jobs to do, so they are suffering from stress. If they will work hard then they can fulfill their family requirements. For example, in many underdeveloped countries, job ratio is declined. People have degrees in their hand, but have no livelihood. Secondly, students are suffering from stress because they want to balance their life. They are doing part time jobs to fulfill their education expensis. For instance, In the university of lahore, a student attempted suicide because of work load. Thirdly, People in the past have no more responsibilities because of low competition. For example, Although they failed in their exams, they have property to fulfill their requirements. People in the past depended on their property to fo farm work.
However, some people believe people suffered from anxiety in the past because they have pressure in their mind. People left their home to earn livelihood because they thought only male can do work. For example, they thaught woment could be housewife rather than professionalist. Furthermore, they have family pressure because they want to give dowry to their daughters. If they are poor, they suffered from anxiety.
In my own opinion, today's generation suffered from more stress rather than past because of competition. Every people including students have stress in their mind because of family responsibilities. They are passing through the mountain of difficulties in order to fulfill their requirements.
In my conclusion, people have two type of ideas. Some believe that today stress ration is at the peak than in past while some people agreed with opposite ideas.
In my point of view, today's people have more responsibilities rather than in past because people lived simple life in the past.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and state a clear preference for the view that people today experience more stress, especially in the paragraph beginning “In my own opinion.” The discussion includes relevant examples, such as unemployment, students balancing work and study, and financial pressure around dowries. However, the response only partially develops the comparison: claims such as people in the past having “low competition” or relying on property are not explained enough to show how their pressures differed from modern ones. Some examples are also asserted rather than connected clearly to the argument. To strengthen the response, explain each main reason and compare the nature of past and present pressures more directly, while keeping your position consistent in the conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an identifiable structure, with an introduction, a paragraph supporting present-day stress, a contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “However” help signal the direction of the discussion. Nevertheless, progression is not consistently clear: the first body paragraph moves from responsibilities to unemployment, students, and then past property without sufficiently linking these points. The conclusion repeats the opinion rather than drawing the discussion together, and the opening and closing statements partly repeat one another. Some linking phrases are mechanical, while references such as “they” can leave the reader unsure which group is meant. Group related reasons more carefully and use transitions that show the relationship between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “responsibilities,” “competition,” “livelihood,” and “family pressure,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “stress,” “people,” and “requirements,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear. For example, “job ratio is declined” does not express the intended idea naturally, and “professionalist” is not an appropriate term for a person with a profession. Spelling errors such as “expensis” and “thaught” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of expressions for employment, financial strain, and social expectations, and check spelling and collocations when revising.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including conditional forms such as “If they will work hard then they can fulfill their family requirements” and a concessive clause beginning “Although they failed in their exams.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. Examples include “people in the past centuries suffered … rather than today,” “Now people feel more stress but did not found,” and “Every people … have stress.” Tense shifts, subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries also need attention. Practise keeping time references consistent, matching verbs to their subjects, and forming conditionals accurately; then proofread each sentence for a complete, clear grammatical structure.
