IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In some places, presently stress is considered as the main problem, and it is believed that many people face more stress which is compared to past. While, others feel that the number of people suffer stress nowadays is increasing. They say that the older generations had faced more pressure but they didn't suffer from stress in those days.

Firstly, in some socities, many people suffer more stress than the past because of overthinking about future problems lead to many health problems in dailylife. For example, panic attack and heartstrokes are frequently common nowadays for people who take more stress. Moreover, this results a major problem of having risk for life and even deaths so, meditation and yoga can be some key benefits to reduce stress.

Secondly, nowadays the remaining persons believe that the number of people facing stress is relatively growing wisely and reached peak comparing to the past generations. Well, the older generations haven't faced any stress but they had a high pressure on their life like growing children, cultivating land etc.. For instance, gambling is also a type of addiction most of the people play and get stressed towards it. This results in high bloodpressure which leads to more stress. Mainly due to unwanted things and works todays generations face huge stress.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You attempt to discuss both views, referring to present-day stress and to pressures faced by earlier generations, and you include examples such as work, raising children and farming. However, the response does not clearly explain the first view that stress is greater today: the opening says this, but the first body paragraph gives only a brief link between overthinking and health problems. The second view is also confusingly presented, and the final line, “In my opinion, seeing both views,” does not state your position. As a result, the task is only partially addressed and the ideas remain limited and under-developed. The response is also 30 words below the required minimum. Develop each view with a clear explanation and example, then give a complete, explicit opinion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introduction, two body paragraphs beginning “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and a separate concluding line. This gives the reader some sense of the intended structure. However, progression within the paragraphs is difficult to follow because ideas are not consistently linked: the discussion moves from stress to meditation, then to gambling and blood pressure without explaining the connections. The contrast between the two views is also unclear, and the final line is incomplete rather than a conclusion. Some linking expressions, such as “Moreover” and “For instance,” are used, but they do not always create a clear relationship between points. Build each paragraph around one view, explain the reasoning step by step, and finish with a complete conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “pressure,” “panic attack,” “addiction,” “cultivating land” and “meditation,” so the reader can identify the general subject. There are also attempts to express cause and effect through phrases such as “leads to” and “results.” However, the range is limited and several choices or combinations are inaccurate or unclear, including “the number of people suffer stress,” “growing wisely,” and “reached peak.” Spelling and word-form errors such as “socities,” “dailylife” and “bloodpressure” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording—for example, describe stress levels as “increasing” or “rising,” rather than “growing wisely.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a reason clause in “because of overthinking about future problems lead to many health problems” and a relative clause in “people who take more stress.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors in sentence formation, agreement, articles and punctuation sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “the number of people suffer stress” needs a grammatical clause such as “the number of people who suffer from stress,” while “this results a major problem” is missing a required preposition. The opening “While, others…” is also an incomplete or incorrectly punctuated contrast. Practise building complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check agreement and clause structure before adding more complex ideas.
