IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
You introduce the topic and signal a personal view with “I personally believe that stress is glamourized,” while also referring to both perspectives. However, the response does not develop either view: it gives no explanation or example of why people today may experience more stress, or why earlier generations may have faced greater pressure. Your opinion is also left incomplete, so its reasoning is unclear. Most importantly, the response is far below the required 250 words, leaving the task only minimally addressed. To improve, explain each viewpoint in a separate developed paragraph, support claims with relevant examples, and state a complete, reasoned opinion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has a basic progression: it introduces mental health, presents the two views, and begins to state your opinion. Linking expressions such as “While” and “Although” show an attempt to connect contrasting ideas. However, the whole response is one short, unfinished paragraph, so the views and your position are not separated or developed into a clear argument. The opening “While” clause is not properly connected to a main clause, and the final phrase “stress is glamourized much” stops before the point is explained. Use distinct paragraphs for the two views and your opinion, and make sure each sentence completes one clear idea before moving to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “mental health,” “physical health,” “emotional burden,” and “previous generations,” which helps identify the subject. There is also an attempt to express a nuanced position through “both these views have merits.” However, the range is limited by the very short response, and several word-choice or spelling problems make the meaning less natural: “termenology” is misspelled, “stree” appears to be a typo, and “glamourized” does not clearly convey what you mean about stress. “Our elders have more emotional burden” is also an awkward collocation. Choose precise expressions such as “older generations faced greater pressures” and explain what you mean by stress being overstated or more widely recognised.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt a complex contrast using “While” and “Although,” and the opening sentence is a clear simple structure. However, the complex sentences are not controlled consistently. “While, others argue…” is an incomplete clause, and “Although, both these views have merits but…” incorrectly combines two contrasting structures. In “mental health is as important as physical health,” the general statement needs an article before “mental health” in this context, while “were not existed” uses an incorrect verb construction; use “did not exist.” Punctuation after introductory conjunctions is also misplaced. Build accuracy by writing complete clauses, choosing either “although” or “but,” and checking verb forms and articles.
