IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Although every generation struggles especially a person who is a struggler, and have responsibilities to fulfill which may cause stress. Some people argue that previous generation suffered substantially with stress, while in present they only over emphasis it otherwise they are not stressed in reality; however I completely disagree with this statement, therefore I will elucidate both the perspective and then will conclude what I believe that now people suffer more with anxiety comparatively with the past.
One the one hand, in the past when people had limited resources and opportunities, they had to try harder, and it took a significant amount of effords and time to get a better life, everyone had different journey and their destination, while one thing was prevasive that they always had someone to talk to, people were benelovent, theit intensions were genuine, they shared their feelings, and people were trustworthy and honest. Eventually these positive traits were sufficient to mitigate depression and stress.
On the other hand, now we have plenty of resources for entertainment and opportunities to be successful but still we are depressed. The reason is, the priorities of individual have changed. They more rely on online communications instead of physcial presence, they give preference their own space, they avoid to show to their emotions, they do not share their feeling, do not even allow other to ask, they called them, their privacy. They have trust issue, they expect more from others while, being stoic, consequently all these acts lead to loneliness. They rely more on psychiatrists to share their thoughts rather than their own family members.
Today,s generation is the lost one. They have more influence of negative energy than the positive one because they priortize those things which directly lead to stress. And the obvious reason is less interaction with other people.
In conclusion, in the past if people got stressed they tried to communicate and negotiate and finally find the solution, there intentions were pure, moreover they used to trust each other. Conversely the absence of all these emotions now called this generation more depressed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You present a clear view that people experience more stress today, and you discuss both the claim about past pressures and your explanation of modern stress. The contrast between limited resources in the past and current loneliness gives the response a relevant central idea. However, the two views are not explored evenly: the past is described mainly as difficult materially but socially supportive, without fully explaining why earlier generations might have faced greater pressure. The modern-side argument also relies on broad claims about privacy, online communication and family relationships, with little specific evidence or example. To strengthen the response, explain each view more directly and develop your opinion with a concrete illustration, such as work or financial pressures across generations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, a further paragraph about the present, and a conclusion. Phrases such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help signal the main stages. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because several claims are joined in long lists, particularly the discussion of privacy, trust and loneliness. Some links are mechanical or unclear, and the conclusion largely repeats earlier points rather than bringing the comparison together. The opening sentence is also hard to connect to the position that follows. Organise each paragraph around one main claim, then explain its cause or consequence, using clearer references and fewer chained ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “limited resources,” “mitigate,” “loneliness,” “psychiatrists” and “stoic,” which shows an effort to express more than basic ideas. However, word choice and spelling errors are frequent enough to make some phrases difficult to interpret. Examples include “effords,” “prevasive,” “benelovent,” “theit intensions,” and “priortize.” Several expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “a person who is a struggler,” “they called them, their privacy,” and “negative energy.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than inserting ambitious words where their meaning is uncertain. Proofread spelling and choose direct phrases such as “people face difficulties” or “they value their privacy.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt complex sentences and contrastive structures, including the opening sentence with “Although” and the sentence beginning “The reason is…”. However, the range is not controlled consistently, and frequent errors in sentence formation, agreement, articles and punctuation can make meaning difficult to follow. For example, “Although every generation struggles … and have responsibilities” has an incomplete construction and mismatched subject agreement; “the priorities of individual have changed” is missing a plural marker and article; and “They more rely” has incorrect word order. Comma splices and run-on lists also occur, especially in the paragraph about past generations. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with subordinate clauses. Check subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence boundaries during revision.
