IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

First of all, narrative of the communities exist like some of the people think that in current time stress is the most common problem and majority of the people suffer from it than the past and the other party feels that stress in the society is exaggerated today alot while past generations were more underpressure but they never reflect that stress ever exist.

According to my opinion I feel that in this current time people are more in hustle bustle and generations are so much busy in their lives that no one have any specific time for each other because everyone is so much busy in their daily chaos and obviously due to time management and for the sake of personal time people are suffering alot from the stress like conditions as compare to the past generations. In this fast era of technology have reduce the work load on people but other different living factors are generated and people are struggling with it which by the end of day affect them alot and their mental stability is majorly affected due to such conditions so according to my observation todays societies are more involved in stress.

While in past not so much physical and mental activites are focused in populations, life was simple past times people just work and live with no other standarized race of life so conditions were very simple back times.

So I as a young generation of this current time feel that stress is more dominant in this era as compared to the past one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear overall opinion: you believe stress is more dominant today, and you offer relevant reasons such as busy lifestyles, limited time for relationships, and pressures associated with modern life. However, the discussion of the two views is uneven. The present-day view receives several explanations, while the claim that earlier generations faced greater pressure is only briefly mentioned in “life was simple” and that people “just work and live.” This does not explain what pressures they experienced or why stress may not have been recognised. Your position is present, but the ideas remain general and are not supported with a specific example. Develop both perspectives more fully and explain the basis for your comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic overall structure: an opening that introduces the debate, a paragraph explaining your view, a short paragraph about the past, and a concluding opinion. This gives the reader a general sense of direction. However, progression within paragraphs is difficult to follow because several ideas are packed into long sentences, particularly the paragraph beginning “According to my opinion.” Linking expressions such as “First of all,” “While,” and “So” are used, but they do not always make the relationship between ideas clear, and the opening sentence is especially hard to interpret. Use clearer topic sentences, divide connected points into separate sentences, and make the contrast between the two views more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “mental stability,” “time management,” “work load,” and “generations,” and the reader can generally identify your main subject. However, the range is limited by repeated general terms such as “people,” “stress,” and “busy,” while several word choices or combinations are unnatural or unclear. For example, “narrative of the communities exist” does not clearly introduce the debate, and “standardized race of life” makes your meaning difficult to understand. There are also spelling and form errors, including “alot,” “underpressure,” and “activites.” Aim for precise collocations and check spelling; for instance, describe “workload,” “competitive pressures,” or “the pace of modern life” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to express complex relationships, especially in the long sentence beginning “According to my opinion,” and you use contrast clauses such as “While in past…”. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction can make the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “no one have any specific time,” “technology have reduce,” and “life was simple past times people just work and live,” where clauses are joined without clear grammatical structure. Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with controlled clauses using conjunctions such as “because,” “whereas,” and “although.”
