IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In many researches, stress is the major issue revealed. and many people think past generation have the more stress than the new generation. However, some people thought today new generations is more show thier stress in front of people.19 cneturary people was not take stress to serious and they dont know about the stress.

Overall, in my opinion our parents born in 19th century and they are so strength full because they have many embitions to success in the future and they have more stress than us but they dont feel any type of stress in their time they do work with a proper confidence and dont take any work hardly if they dont done their work and someone give their work and they will not go in stress and in the now time generation dont do any work but they are always in the tention.

Furthermore, in my side i experice this situation in my last office well, when i was in my ex office and in that office have multiple age people and they do their work without stress and on the other side new generations employee do less work and take stress more even manager support them in my opinion new generation exxagurated more they are in stress but in real situation they doing nothing.

In conclusion, Old people taking stress is very low if they are in major problem but the new generation is take tention even if they are in less stress but they show they are in big tention

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a relevant opinion: you argue that earlier generations faced pressure but showed less visible stress, while younger people may express it more openly. The office example also supports your comparison. However, the task asks you to discuss both views, and the response mainly develops the view that older people were stronger and younger people exaggerate stress. The opposing view—that modern life may create greater stress—is not clearly explained or supported. Your position is also difficult to follow at first because the opening sentence is unclear, and claims such as younger employees “do less work” are broad rather than evidenced. Explain both perspectives distinctly, then support your judgement with specific reasons or examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the office experience gives the discussion a recognisable example. However, progression between ideas is often unclear. The opening moves from research to past generations and then to how younger people show stress without clearly connecting these points. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” signal stages, but they do not resolve unclear relationships between claims. Several sentences contain multiple ideas joined together, especially the paragraph beginning “Overall, in my opinion,” which makes the argument hard to follow. Use one main point per paragraph, order the two views clearly, and use pronouns and transitions to show how each example supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “stress,” “pressure,” “generation,” and “manager,” so the reader can identify the subject of the essay. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repeated, particularly “stress” and “new generation.” Frequent spelling and word-choice problems sometimes make meaning difficult to interpret, as in “strength full,” “embitions,” “exxagurated,” and “take tention.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “take any work hardly” and “in my side.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and vary repeated terms—for example, use “younger adults” or “workplace pressure” where appropriate. Proofreading spelling and choosing precise words would make your ideas much clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

There are attempts to express comparisons and give reasons, but sentence structures are mostly simple or joined into long, faulty sentences. Errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction occur throughout: “past generation have,” “people was not take,” and “new generations employee do less work” are examples. Articles and plurals are also inconsistently controlled, and punctuation is unreliable, including the full stop after “revealed” followed by a lower-case “and.” These problems sometimes make it difficult to understand who is doing what. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then add controlled clauses with “because,” “although” and “while.” Check subject–verb agreement and verb tense in every sentence.
