IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Across many societies stress is now regarded as a significant issue and the common believe is people nowadays suffer more from stress than they did in the past. While that may be true, others like to contradict that statement that the amount of stress people have today is overstated and previous generations had to suffer under worse conditions.
In recent times, stress has been concerning, and deemed as a rising problem as more and more people are affected on a daily basis. This is because in the modern century most poeple are living paycheque to paycheque leaving a financial burden to most.As a result, more people struggle to meet their daily needs incurring stress. To add to that, more people are aware regarding mental health conditions so people are now more concerned about depression and stress than they were in earlier times. For example, a recent study shows that nearly 65% of millenials are unable to pay their rent let alone own a house troubling their mental condition. Thus, they are more stressed and seek professional help from therapists to share their stress to avoid going into depression. As it's a more common practice among younger generations it may portray a picture that more people suffer from stress today.
However, previous generations were not that cautious about their mental health. Due to lower rates of inflation, their earnings were enough to cover their bills which lead to higher job satisfaction.A majority of the older generation owned their own homes and were more comfortable financially which resulted in lower levels of stress. Moreover, as they would not share their problems with consulting groups, therapists, or even their neighbours due to different mentality it was harder to judge the amount of people who are struggling with stress.
To conclude, I feel like more people are stressed in newer generations due to rising inflations rates or lack of security but as it is widespread due to the presence of social media and mental health consulting groups it is more visible. While the amount of stress people have today is certainly exaggerated it is still higher when compared to previous generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and give a clear overall position: modern stress is higher, but its visibility is also greater. The discussion of current pressures is supported with examples such as rent affordability and greater use of therapists, while the paragraph on earlier generations explains that mental-health concerns were less openly discussed. This covers the task well. However, some points are asserted rather than fully established: for example, the claim that older people had lower stress because inflation was lower and home ownership was more common needs qualification or evidence, and the study statistic is not explained in enough detail. Develop the comparison more evenly and distinguish clearly between actual stress levels and willingness to report stress.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two perspectives, and a conclusion that restates your view. Linking expressions such as “As a result,” “Moreover,” and “To conclude” help show the relationships between ideas. The progression is generally logical, and the contrast between present-day awareness and past reticence is relevant. At times, however, connections feel mechanical or the reference is unclear—for instance, “While that may be true” does not specify which part of the preceding claim is being accepted. Several ideas in the first body paragraph are crowded together, and spacing after full stops is inconsistent. Use clearer topic sentences and make each paragraph’s central comparison more explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “financial burden,” “job satisfaction,” “mental health,” and “professional help.” These choices make the main argument clear, and you attempt more specific language such as “paycheque to paycheque.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “common believe” should be “common belief,” “share their stress to avoid going into depression” is not a natural expression, and “rising inflations rates” is incorrectly formed. There are also spelling errors, including “poeple” and “millenials.” These do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more natural collocations would improve precision and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including subordinate clauses beginning “While,” “as,” and “which,” and most ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries. For example, “the common believe is people nowadays suffer” needs a clearer construction such as “the common belief is that people nowadays suffer”; “which lead to higher job satisfaction” should agree with its subject; and “As a result, more people struggle … stress. To add to that” needs a space and clearer punctuation between sentences. The long sentence beginning “As it's a more common practice” also has an unclear reference. Review clause structure, agreement, and punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
