IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often debated whether today, individuals are affected more with stress as compared to people did in past or if it is more appropriate that there is an exaggeration regarding stress as past generations undergone more pressure but there was no concept of suffering from stress. In my opinion, I strongly align with the former view beacuse moder generation is widely suffering from stress issues.

On the one hand, those who advocate for the newer concept of stress, argue that there was no such belief of stress in the past. The primary reason behind this is that older population were neither that advanced nor had complex work life. For instance, although, back in time jobs were easy and life was simple, people still had some problems which made them under pressure but they were strong and brave which was the primary reason stress did not affect them. As a result, it is understandable why some people favour this belief.

On the other hand, I side with those who believe that current generation are more affected by the stress. This viewpoint is largely base on the fact that, now a days work life balance is really difficult which puts extra pressure on people forced them to suffer from stress. A prominent example of this can be seen in the competition in todays world where earning money becomes so difficult that individuals have immense pressure on them to earn the bread. If they are unable to find any job it will give them a huge stress attack. Therefore, this is evident that why this perspective is more logical and benificial.

In conclusion, while there are valid arguments for the denial of old generation suffering from stress I firmly believe that stress is currently a major problem. This is because of the fast pace life along with the severe competiition.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear position: you support the view that people today experience more stress. The two body paragraphs also give relevant reasons, including simpler working lives in the past and present-day competition for jobs and income. However, the discussion of the opposing view is less fully developed: the claim that people in the past were “strong and brave” is asserted rather than supported, and it does not explain whether they experienced pressures comparable to stress today. Your own argument is relevant, but the example of unemployment and a “stress attack” could be explained more carefully and linked to why modern pressures are greater. Develop each reason with a specific, plausible example or explanation to make the response more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. For example, “As a result” does not clearly show how the claim that people were brave follows from the preceding explanation, and “Therefore, this is evident that why” makes the relationship between the example and your conclusion difficult to follow. The introduction is also a long sentence containing several competing ideas. Use clearer sentence boundaries and make each linking phrase express the exact relationship between the ideas it connects.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “work life balance,” “competition,” “pressure,” and “fast pace life,” and your meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “advocate for” and “prominent example.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “affected more with stress,” “stress attack,” and “earn the bread.” Spelling errors such as “beacuse,” “moder,” “benificial,” and “competitiion” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations such as “experience stress,” “face intense pressure,” and “earn a living,” and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “although,” “which,” and “if,” and the overall meaning can usually be followed. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “older population were” needs a plural subject or a singular verb, while “current generation are” has a similar agreement problem. In “work life balance … puts extra pressure on people forced them to suffer,” the verbs do not form a clear grammatical structure. The opening sentence is also difficult to control because several clauses are joined together. Practise building complex sentences around one clear main clause, then check subject–verb agreement and verb forms.
