IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

One school of thought argues that, in recent years stress becomes the siginifacnt issue as compared to the past. Other claims that older generations faced more pressure than present generation however the exaggeration make it worst.

From my prespective, present people are more prone to stress due to earn a better life and career.

On the one hand, thoes who support that people are facing alot of stress nowadays than past is may be due to hectic scedual and robotic lifestyle. This is the primary reason because citizen of any age is following a strict scedual from 9 to 5 and sometimes it extends according to type of employment or studies to persue a better career and ultimately a satisfying lifestyle. Additionally, brain is continously under pressure to acheive these goals to get their dream life. For example, i am a working mother i want to get UK's licence to persue my job their so i follows a busy rotain along with my job studies and pampering my baby. Consequently, i am stressing about many things at a time if i can't get the licence or if i am not finishing my work ang household responsibilities well.

On the other hand, proponenets about the fact that the previous people have been in more pressure than today and now individuals are stetching it. This is largely because people are more elaborated today they are keeping their mental health first so they openly talk about their stress however our ancestors did not have this oppertunity to express. Another fact is that although they are under pressure but they did not have much options to fix their life. Nevertheless, despite of these facts , i believe that the first viewpoint is more beneficial because this is the moderan era with altered approaches for life.

In conclusion , although the second viewpoint may have certain facts, i strongly agree that the first viewpoint is mo

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear preference: you argue that people today face greater stress because of career and lifestyle demands, while recognising that earlier generations may have had fewer opportunities to discuss mental health. The personal example of balancing work, study and childcare supports your position and makes the argument relevant. However, the second view is less fully developed: the point that earlier people had fewer options is mentioned but not explained with a specific example or consequence. Your conclusion is also cut off after “I strongly agree that the first viewpoint is mo…”, so it does not complete the final judgement. Develop both sides more evenly and finish with a complete summary of your opinion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and an attempted conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the broad direction. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to track: the first body paragraph moves from work schedules to personal goals and then to your example without clearly linking each step. Some connections are also awkward or unclear, such as “Nevertheless, despite of these facts,” and the conclusion ends mid-sentence. Use clearer topic sentences and make each supporting point lead explicitly to the next; ensure the final paragraph is complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “hectic,” “robotic lifestyle,” “mental health,” and “under pressure,” and these choices help communicate the main ideas. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause, for example “siginifacnt,” “scedual,” “acheive,” and “oppertunity.” Several phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “the exaggeration make it worst,” “people are more elaborated,” and “pampering my baby” in this context. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully. A more controlled range of topic vocabulary would make your arguments clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “although,” and “if,” and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, errors occur across verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “stress becomes” needs a suitable tense, “other claims” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, and “i follows” does not agree with its subject. The sentence beginning “This is the primary reason because…” is also awkwardly constructed, while “if i can't get the licence or if i am not finishing” mixes forms in a way that weakens clarity. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, consistent tense, and accurate clause structure.
