IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is often argued that some individuals are in more stress nowadays then the past however, others thaught that previous age groups are in more depression. I will discuss both views and will give my opinion.
Firstly, nowadays individuals using social media throughout their electronic devices like mobile phones and listen different type of newses about social health, or about country circumstances may feel stress more. For instance if a person listen to a news which is related to health that drinking different type of soda botteles may cause effect to our kidneys and he may feel depressed because in our daily life many peoples are drinking soda botteles.
Secondly, in past the previous age groups may not feel depressed due to the reason is that in past there is no internet and mobile phones. In addition individuals spend their time with families and friends to enjoy their day. For instance in past people sit in type of group and communicate with each other and spend their day happily.
In my opinion present age groups spending their life under depression as copared to previous age groups. Because nowadays social media devices make gap between relationships and individuals just give priority to their mobile phones and feel depressed always.
In conclusion, stress is a big problem for present individual and past generations may spend their entire life happily just because of social media devices.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You address both views and state your position: you suggest that modern media increases stress, while people in the past had more face-to-face contact, and you conclude that present-day people are more affected. However, the discussion is only partial and the ideas are not sufficiently developed. The example about soda and kidney health illustrates exposure to worrying news, but its link to stress is not fully explained; the claim that earlier generations lived happily is also asserted rather than supported. The response contains 233 words, so it does not meet the required minimum of 250. To strengthen the response, explain what pressures each generation faced, support both sides with relevant examples, and make your comparison more balanced.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the basic progression. However, connections between some claims are abrupt or unclear. For example, the first body paragraph moves from social media and news to a soda-related health concern without fully showing how this leads to stress. The opinion paragraph also repeats the idea that mobile phones cause depression rather than extending the argument. Use clearer links between cause and effect, and develop each paragraph around one main point with supporting explanation. This would make the organisation feel less mechanical and the progression more complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use a small range of topic-related vocabulary, including “social media,” “relationships,” “pressure,” and “depressed,” so the general subject is understandable. However, vocabulary is limited and repetitive, and several inaccurate word choices or forms make parts of the response awkward. Phrases such as “in more stress,” “previous age groups,” and “newses” do not express the intended ideas naturally; “depression” is also used where “stress” may be more accurate. Spelling errors such as “thaught,” “botteles,” and “copared” further reduce control. Build a more precise range for discussing causes and effects, and check spelling and collocations. For example, distinguish between experiencing stress and having depression.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, including a conditional example beginning “if a person listen to a news” and a reason introduced by “because.” However, the range is limited, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to process. Examples include “individuals using social media,” “a person listen,” and “in past there is no internet”; these need a finite verb, correct agreement, and consistent tense. The opening sentence also joins contrasting clauses without clear punctuation. Practise forming accurate complex sentences with “because,” “although,” and “if,” while checking subject–verb agreement and tense consistency. Clearer sentence boundaries would improve readability.
