IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In a few communities, it is widely argued that individuals suffer largely from stress nowadays than they did in the previous times and stress is now thought to be a major problem. Nevertheless, some individuals state that the individuals from the past had no idea about suffering from stress despite having more pressure so stress is simply exaggerated nowadays. I largely agree with this notion that people nowadays are prone of suffering from stress than the previous generations because the idea of stress is simply overhyped.

In recent times, individuals suffer more from stress because they have the idea of it, when they think about stress they are more likely to suffer from it. Moreover, previous generations had no concept of stress despite having a lot of work pressure and tensed life and this is due to the fact that they did not know about stress exactly.

First of all, circumstances nowadays have been changed largely in addition people tend to be more sensitive and more likely to undergo stressed conditions. For instance, in Pakistan the youngsters undergo more stressed conditions than the elderly people and the Pakistani survey clearly states that this is simply because the youth have the idea and concept

of stress.

I would also like to discuss the idea that previous generations did not suffered from stress even when they had more pressure and less facilities than today this is mainly because their minds were built in a different way, they were strong and they were use to of such things. Furthermore, they just did not know anything about stress. To illustrate, we know that the people before were made strong and they had a lot of work to do that they had little or no time to think about stress.

Consequently, both concepts have a valid reason and stress mainly comes from thinking about it in my opinion. We should always think in a positive manner and make ourselves busy in our daily lives to have no time to think about stress specially the youth nowadays.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and state a position: you argue that people today are more prone to stress, while also suggesting that stress is “overhyped.” However, these claims are not reconciled clearly, so your overall opinion is difficult to follow. The discussion of modern stress relies mainly on the idea that awareness makes people more likely to experience it, and the Pakistan example is asserted rather than supported with specific evidence. You also present past generations as stronger and busier, but do not examine whether their pressures may have been different. To strengthen the response, explain each view more fully, use a concrete example, and clarify how your final judgement follows from the discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an introduction, separate discussion paragraphs and a conclusion, so the reader can identify its broad structure. However, progression within and between paragraphs is limited: several points repeat the claim that earlier generations did not know about stress, and the conclusion largely restates that stress comes from thinking about it. Connectors such as “Moreover,” “First of all,” and “Furthermore” are used, but they do not always show a clear relationship between ideas. The shift from agreeing that people today suffer more to calling stress “simply overhyped” also weakens the overall line of argument. Organise each body paragraph around one distinct view, develop it in sequence, and use clearer links between claims and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary, including “major problem,” “pressure,” “previous generations,” and “sensitive,” which helps communicate the topic. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “circumstances” and “concept.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “stress,” “idea,” and “pressure,” and several expressions are unnatural or imprecise, including “prone of suffering,” “undergo stressed conditions,” and “use to of such things.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Build a more varied set of topic-specific expressions and check common collocations; for example, people are “prone to stress,” and they “experience stressful conditions.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, using clauses with “because,” “despite,” and “when,” and the main ideas are generally understandable. However, errors recur in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction. Examples include “previous generations did not suffered” (use “did not suffer”), “their minds were built” followed by “they were use to” (use “were used to”), and “people nowadays are prone of suffering” (the grammatical pattern is “prone to suffering”). The opening sentence also contains an awkward comparison structure, while the long sentence beginning “First of all” needs clearer punctuation between its clauses. Review verb patterns after auxiliaries and practise building accurate complex sentences; this will make your argument easier to read.
