IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is often argued that nowadays, stress is considered a serious challenge in many societies, and it is assumed that individuals' experience more stress than they did in the old days. However, other think that todays' people are exaggerating the amount of stress. They say that earlier generations were under the shade of more pressure, but the concept of suffering from stress did not exist. I partially agree with this statement. Because in old days people reduce their stress levels with some physical activities but now people are more stressed the main reason for their stress level is physical inactivity.
On the one hand, the primary argument is that in old times people were so active they reduce their stress with their activities. For example, back then, people used to play sports at night to maintain a healthy life which had helped them cope up with stress. Furthurmore, it brought some positive change in their lives. As a result, people stay happy and healthy with their lives.
On the other hand, another argument is that nowadys, people are suffering from higher levels of stress because of less-activeness they do not even know how to cope up with stress, and mind diversion plays a significant role in reducing stress. For instance, if people do 30 minutes of walking regulary they may reduce their stress levels. A s a result, they may get more satisfied with their jobs and lives.
In conclusion, physical activities play a vital role in persons' development, it brings some positive changes, and helps to reduce the levels of stress in the human body. This benefits the individuals and society as a whole.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You present a partial position—“I partially agree”—and include a paragraph for each view, but the discussion does not fully explain the contrast in the prompt. The first body paragraph focuses on past generations’ physical activity, without showing why they faced greater pressure or why stress was not recognised as a concept. The second argues that inactivity increases stress today, but this does not directly address whether modern stress is exaggerated. Your examples, such as playing sports at night and walking for 30 minutes, are relevant to physical activity but are asserted rather than developed with clear reasoning or evidence. To strengthen the response, explain the pressures faced in each era, distinguish actual stress from its recognition, and make your own judgement more explicit and consistently supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. This makes the main direction easy to follow. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, with repeated cause-and-result links such as “As a result,” and the relationship between some claims is not fully clear. For example, the first paragraph moves from past activity to people being “happy and healthy” without explaining how this addresses the view that earlier generations faced more pressure. The conclusion also repeats the focus on physical activity rather than bringing the two views together. Use clearer links between each claim and the task, and develop each paragraph around one fully explained point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “stress levels,” “physical inactivity,” “cope with stress,” and “mind diversion.” However, the range is limited and several choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which can make the argument less precise. Examples include “under the shade of more pressure,” “less-activeness,” and “satisfied with their jobs and lives.” There are also spelling and form errors such as “Furthurmore,” “nowadys,” and “regulary.” Aim for more natural topic-specific expressions and check spelling carefully. For instance, describe people as facing “greater pressure,” refer to “lower levels of physical activity,” and explain that exercise may help people “manage stress” rather than relying on unclear phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast in the opening and a conditional example: “if people do 30 minutes of walking regularly they may reduce their stress levels.” However, control is uneven, and errors in agreement, verb forms, sentence boundaries, and punctuation sometimes make the meaning harder to follow. For example, “individuals' experience” incorrectly marks possession, while “people were so active they reduce their stress” shifts tense and needs clearer clause punctuation. The opening of the conclusion joins two independent ideas with a comma. Practise maintaining consistent past or present tense, checking subject–verb agreement, and separating complete clauses with a full stop or an appropriate conjunction. These changes would make your ideas clearer while allowing you to retain varied sentence structures.
