IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Stress is a common problem in all over the world and magoraty of our adults are under the stress now a days. Now people of several sites are ill with stress than the past. Individuals say that citizens in past were under more pressure, but disease like stress was not exist.

Personaly, I agree with both conditions. Today, stress is common in our socities.Even teen agers claim that they are under the stress. If we look after the whole world lack of confidence and low resources to overcome this situation are main cause of it. For example, overthinking has made the people stressfull. Taking review from global village, most of citizens are poor. They don not have enough money to complete their basic needs. Due to it people get stress and then moved to socide. Many families have destroyed due to lack of resources to fullfill important wishes. Another one great reason of such situation is that we are far from our creator "Allah". In some situation we are become cause of our stress. We chose wronge ways to fulfuill wishes that can be a major cause of such situation for our family. Mainly youger generation of present age is in stress without any reason. Some are in the stress because they could not get their love means their lovely girl whom they love with.

Talking about, in the past people has enough resources to fullfill their wishes . Our ancestors passed from very difficult circumstances but don not under go the stress. In previous ages thing like it was not exist because individuals had great believe on Allah. In Quran Allah says that "And Allah is responsible for your live, death or your sustenance".

In conclusion, such real situations can be the cause of stress, but most of them exist for very short time. We need to beleive on Allah and follow the right way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both views and give a personal position, stating, “I agree with both conditions,” then discussing present-day pressures and the belief that earlier generations faced hardship without describing it as stress. However, the position remains unclear: agreeing with both sides is not explained as a balanced judgement, and the conclusion mainly recommends belief in Allah rather than resolving which view you find more convincing. Several points—poverty, overthinking, faith, and romantic disappointment—are introduced but not developed with clear explanation or relevant evidence. The discussion of the past is especially brief and relies on a broad claim that people had enough resources. To strengthen the response, explain why stress may be more visible today while acknowledging the pressures faced by previous generations, and support each main point with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph focused mainly on current stress, a paragraph about the past, and a conclusion. This gives the reader some organisation. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven, and several ideas are placed together without showing how they connect—for example, the discussion moves from poverty to faith, then to family wishes and romantic disappointment. Linking phrases such as “Another one great reason” and “Talking about” are either awkward or do not clearly signal the relationship between ideas. References such as “such situation” are also vague. Use one central idea per paragraph, develop it in a logical sequence, and use clear transitions to compare the two views and lead to your final position.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “pressure,” “resources,” “overthinking,” and “sustenance,” and the reader can generally identify your intended meaning. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, word-form, and spelling errors make parts difficult to understand. Examples include “magoraty,” “stressfull,” “socide,” and “fullfill”; phrases such as “get stress,” “passed from very difficult circumstances,” and “great believe” are also unnatural. Repetition of “stress,” “people,” and “situation” further limits precision. Build a bank of accurate topic phrases, such as “experience psychological strain” and “face financial hardship,” and check spelling and collocations carefully. This would make your ideas clearer and more appropriate for an academic discussion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including a conditional-style example beginning “If we look after the whole world,” but control is inconsistent. Frequent errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For instance, “disease like stress was not exist” has an incorrect verb pattern, while “Our ancestors passed from very difficult circumstances but don not under go the stress” contains problems with tense, negation, and article use. Some sentences also lack clear grammatical connections, as in “In some situation we are become cause of our stress.” Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them using clauses such as “although” and “because.” Proofread specifically for verb forms, singular/plural agreement, and articles.
