IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The opening identifies the topic of stress and attempts to refer to both views: that people suffer more stress today and that earlier generations faced greater pressure. However, the response does not develop either view, give examples or evidence, or state your own opinion, so the main requirements of the question remain largely unaddressed. The final idea—that earlier generations did not know how to suffer from the issue—is unclear and does not explain why they may have faced more pressure. The response is also substantially below the required 250 words, leaving too little space to build an argument. To improve, explain each perspective in a separate paragraph, support each with a relevant example, and conclude with a clear personal position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

There is a basic attempt to introduce the topic and contrast the two perspectives, using phrases such as “In the present time” and “other concerned.” This gives the reader a general sense of the intended direction. However, the response consists of one long, run-on passage, with no clear paragraphing or progression from one view to the other. The contrast is difficult to follow because the ideas are joined without reliable punctuation or clear linking. For example, the shift from people suffering more stress today to previous generations facing more pressure is not clearly signposted. Organise the response into an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion; use accurate connectors such as “By contrast” and “In my view.”

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some topic-related vocabulary, including “stress,” “major issue,” “pressure,” and “previous generations,” so the central subject is recognisable. There is also an attempt to use more formal expressions such as “contemporary era.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are frequent enough to make parts of the message difficult to interpret: “strees,” “strwes,” “sufficients,” and “concernd” appear, while “suffer from more stress” is repeated. Some phrases are unnatural, such as “young individuals around the global.” Build accuracy with common collocations before attempting more elaborate wording—for example, “young people around the world” and “experience greater stress.” Proofread spelling and avoid repeating the same key word when a precise alternative is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt to form connected sentences and use a subordinate clause in “they argue that previous generations were under more pressure,” showing some ability to express relationships between ideas. However, the response relies on a narrow range of sentence patterns, and errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, articles, and verb forms make the meaning unclear in places. The opening fragment “IN THE PRESENT TIME” is not integrated smoothly, and the long sequence beginning “In the contemporary era” needs clearer punctuation and sentence structure. The phrase “they do not have any idea” also shifts tense awkwardly when discussing previous generations. Practise writing complete sentences with one main idea each, then combine them using accurate clauses and punctuation.
