IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies one relevant idea: people may become stressed when they are dissatisfied with what they have, and the example of students facing exams is appropriate. However, it does not discuss the opposing view that earlier generations faced greater pressure, and it gives no clear, developed opinion comparing the two perspectives. The explanation of students’ stress is brief and does not provide enough support to answer the full question. The response is also substantially below the required 250 words, which leaves the task only minimally addressed. To improve, explain both views, state your own position clearly, and develop each point with a specific example or explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

There is a basic sequence from a general claim about stress to a possible cause and then a student example, so the reader can follow the broad direction of the response. However, the ideas are presented as one continuous block, with no paragraphing to distinguish the views or the writer’s opinion. Connections between points are limited, and the example’s ending—students “goes to long stress for whole night”—is difficult to follow. Use separate paragraphs for the two perspectives and your conclusion, and connect each claim to its explanation with clear linking phrases. This would create a more purposeful progression rather than a short chain of loosely connected statements.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some relevant vocabulary, including “resources,” “mental health,” “exams,” and “attention,” which helps communicate the general topic. There are also attempts to express cause and consequence, such as describing how dissatisfaction can lead to stress. However, the range is narrow and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unclear, including “unthankful,” “long stress,” and “pay their full attention on their study.” Spelling errors such as “evey,” “thier,” and “cant” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of topic phrases, for example “financial pressures,” “academic performance,” and “prolonged stress,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to link ideas with a reason and an example, using forms such as “because” and “for example,” and the main message is generally understandable. However, sentence structures are mostly simple, and control is inconsistent. For instance, “he wished for other ones when he does not get them” shifts tense, while “then they goes” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. The opening also contains sentence fragments, and punctuation is often missing or misplaced, especially in the long sentence about students. Practise forming complete sentences with consistent subjects and tenses, and use full stops to separate ideas. Adding a few accurate complex sentences would also show a wider grammatical range.
