IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response begins to address the view that people today face greater pressure, linking this to technology and social isolation. However, it does not discuss the opposing view that earlier generations experienced more pressure, nor does it give a clear personal opinion; the promised discussion of “both point of views” is not completed. The opening also shifts between depression and stress, which weakens its focus on the question. The technology example is relevant, but the explanation remains brief and does not establish how it compares with pressures in the past. The response is 84 words below the required minimum, leaving the task substantially incomplete. Develop both perspectives, state your position explicitly, and support each main point with a specific explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic paragraph structure: an introduction is followed by a paragraph beginning “On one hand,” and the ideas in that paragraph move from technology to health effects and then social isolation. Linking expressions such as “however,” “For instance,” and “Therefore” help show relationships between points. However, the response ends without a second viewpoint or conclusion, so there is no clear overall progression through the full discussion. Some connections are also difficult to follow, particularly in the introduction, where the contrast between present-day stress and past generations is compressed into one long sequence. Use separate paragraphs for each view and your opinion, and make sure each paragraph develops one central idea in a logical order.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant vocabulary, including “under high pressure,” “developing technology,” “socially isolated,” and “family gatherings,” which helps communicate the main point. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “numbers of people having stress,” “screening” for time spent looking at screens, and “back back.” There are also spelling errors, including “desendents,” “experiance,” and “stuation,” which reduce precision. The repeated use of general terms such as “problem,” “people,” and “stress” also limits variety. Build a more accurate set of topic-specific expressions and check spelling and collocations; for example, distinguish between “stress” and “depression” consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some complex sentences, including “some people think that a large proportion of population is suffering from this problem as compared to people of past era,” and uses a cause-and-effect structure with “Therefore.” However, the range is limited, and frequent errors in sentence construction, articles, agreement, and punctuation make parts difficult to read. Examples include “a large proportion of population” and “people of past era,” which need clearer article use, and “people spend most of their on electronic devices,” where the sentence structure is incomplete. Several sentences run together without appropriate capitalisation or punctuation, while “i” is not capitalised. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then add complex clauses, checking that each sentence has a complete structure and correct punctuation.
