IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Opinnions diifer on wether people today suffer from higher level of stress than in the past,or if the intensity of contemporary stress is overstated compared to severe pressures experienced by previous generations.I completely agree with this view because Non stop work and tech 24/7 connectivity and social media and constant pressure are the main reason's.

One major reason is that smartphones and work emails follow people everywhere today so the mind never gets a real braek to rest. This is beacuse people don't give themselves time to rest or meditate for example if a person is on work all the day and then uses mobile phones constantly so mind will have less time to rest and as the result stress will occur.

Another significant reason is comparing lives on social media craetes continuous mental pressure regarding money, appearance and success. This is mainly because social media creates fake fantasy for the people who are so much into social media because 90 percent of the stuff is fake and just a showoff for instance if a person is showing beautiful car in social media and posted it which was not probably his car and someone on scial media sees it and compare his self with him and get stressed.

In conclusion, i completely agree that in some socities, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. This is mainly because non stop work and smartphones 24/7 and coonectivity on social media is the main reason for that.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify two relevant contemporary pressures—constant work connectivity and social-media comparison—and give a clear view that stress is a serious problem today. However, the task asks you to discuss both views, including the argument that earlier generations faced greater pressure and did not describe it as stress. That side is not developed; the response mainly supports one position and repeats the prompt’s contrast in the conclusion. Your examples, such as seeing an apparently luxurious car online, are relevant but need fuller explanation and support. The response is also 15 words below the 250-word minimum; the 37 words copied from the prompt are not counted. Develop both perspectives and add a specific example or explanation for each.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Each body paragraph focuses on a related idea, and phrases such as “One major reason” and “Another significant reason” help signal the progression. However, the overall argument does not progress through both sides of the question: the two body paragraphs repeat support for the same view, while the opposing view is absent. Several sentences are long and joined loosely, particularly the example beginning “for instance if a person is showing beautiful car,” which makes the sequence of ideas difficult to follow. The conclusion also largely repeats the prompt. Use clearer sentence boundaries and organise the body around the two contrasting views before stating your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “constant pressure,” “mental pressure,” “connectivity” and “previous generations,” so the main subject is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, such as “social media” appearing repeatedly and “fake fantasy” and “just a showoff.” Spelling errors—including “Opinnions,” “braek,” “beacuse” and “socities”—are noticeable and sometimes slow the reader. Some word combinations are also unnatural, for example “higher level of stress” and “on work all the day.” Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated terms; careful proofreading would also improve clarity and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences with reasons and examples, but the range is limited and complex sentences are often not controlled successfully. For example, “if a person is on work all the day and then uses mobile phones constantly so mind will have less time to rest” has an unclear conditional structure and missing grammatical elements. In “someone … compare his self with him and get stressed,” the verb forms do not agree with the singular subject. There are also problems with articles, plurals and punctuation, including the run-on sentence beginning “This is beacuse” and the missing space after the full stop before “However.” Build shorter, complete sentences first, then practise joining them with accurate clauses and punctuation.
