IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
According to my opinion ,I also agreed with that point that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past.Because nowadays people feel more frustated and they also give up.they take everything as a burden oh theirself.Todays era everyone lost their patience and they become relying on other people and also on technology as well which is such an alarming situation.the only reason behind stress is that we are unable to accept our weak points and we always think that we are right instead the person next to us is wrong.I think that our forefathers are not like us they share their problem to their parents and spend most of time with them, which really helps them to sort out their problems.Todays generations are so busy in their personal lives even they dont have time to spend with their parents because our parewnts can understand us and they were really in favour of us .So sharing problems with them is one of the way to reduce stress as well.I think that previous generations are were not under more pressure like present generation. They manage their time very well and time management is one of the major issue of todays generation.Stress,Hypersensitivity etc are the problems rooted to mis-management of the time. The real example I give you is that I am a university student and also a fresher so I myself and my fellows are worry about our routines and we are unable to manage our time meaningfully,we all are trying to overcome this issue as it will leads to stress.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
Your opinion is identifiable: you agree that people today experience more stress, and you offer reasons such as poor time management and reduced communication with parents. However, the task asks you to discuss both views, and the claim that earlier generations faced greater pressure is not meaningfully explained or supported; instead, you mainly argue that they managed time better. The response therefore addresses the prompt only minimally, with ideas that remain general and under-developed. The personal example about being a university fresher is relevant, but it needs a clearer explanation of how it demonstrates greater stress today. The response is also 248 words, so it falls two words short of the 250-word minimum; this limits the space available to develop both sides.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a discernible line of thought: you move from your view of modern stress to family support, time management, and a personal example. Some links, such as “So sharing problems with them,” help show relationships between ideas. However, the response is presented as one long paragraph, so the discussion of the two views and your opinion are not clearly separated. Connections are often repetitive or abrupt, with “I think” and “also” recurring, and the shift from forefathers’ support to time management is not fully explained. Organise the essay into paragraphs for the opposing view, your view, and a conclusion, and use clearer references to show how each example supports the point being made.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “burden,” “patience,” “time management,” “pressure,” and “stress,” and the reader can generally understand your main message. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear. For example, “give up” does not specify what people give up, while “rooted to mis-management” is not a natural expression. There are also spelling errors such as “frustated” and “parewnts,” and informal or imprecise wording such as “Todays era.” Build a more precise range for discussing causes and effects, and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences using clauses and connectors, for example, “I think that our forefathers are not like us” and the sentence beginning “The real example I give you is that…”. This shows an effort to express relationships between ideas, but the range is limited and complex sentences are often faulty. Errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries occur frequently: “I also agreed” should use a consistent tense, “previous generations are were” contains conflicting verb forms, and “it will leads” has incorrect agreement. Several sentences run together without appropriate punctuation, making them harder to follow. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then build longer sentences with controlled clause structure and consistent tense.
